Job Description
Reporting to the Shift Supervisor and based at the Lytton Refinery in Brisbane, this Shift Chemist role operates as part of a team responsible for delivering laboratory sampling and testing in support of Ampol operations. The role ensures finished products are produced, managed, and released in accordance with required specifications, while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency. The Chemist also provides value‐adding quality and technical support to the Refinery and broader business, including audits, laboratory improvements, instrument support, investigations, and initiatives that contribute to refinery performance and gross margin outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake sampling activities for Jet Fuel, Wastewater Treatment Plant, LPG, test runs, and process gas streams as required.
* Carry out safe and accurate sampling that represents process streams, complies with regulatory and external requirements, and may involve working at heights, accessing elevated platforms, and using respiratory protection equipment.
* Perform laboratory testing and instrument analysis in accordance with approved methods to ensure product quality specifications and external audit requirements are met.
* Deliver timely and accurate analytical results, maintaining data integrity and minimizing laboratory errors to meet internal and external customer expectations.
* Prepare and authorize finished product certificates in compliance with laboratory training systems, while identifying and addressing personal training and competency requirements.
* Promote incident‐free operations through effective use of the Loss Prevention System (LPS), supporting laboratory safety and minimizing environmental and quality incidents.
Qualifications
You are a collaborative and reliable team player with a positive, can‐do attitude, who thrives in a laboratory and operational environment. Ideally you bring experience working as a Chemist within an Oil & Gas or other hazardous facility and consistently demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and compliance. You are technically capable, detail‐focused, and able to apply sound problem‐solving skills to support laboratory operations, product quality, and continuous improvement. You work effectively with others, communicate clearly, and contribute positively to both team outcomes and broader business objectives.
Key Skills and Experience
* Experience working as a Chemist or in a similar role within a hydrocarbon or hazardous facility, including exposure to emergency response situations.
* Demonstrated ability to operate safely within a hazardous facility or related industry.
* Competence in the operation, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
* Knowledge of industry safety standards, Dangerous Goods regulations, and NATA/ISO 17025 requirements.
* Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and good laboratory practices, supported by a bachelor's degree in science (Chemistry desirable).
