The Opportunity
Join a highly skilled and collaborative technical team within Teaching and Research technical Services (TRTS), where you'll play a pivotal role in providing technical support enabling cutting-edge environmental and ecosystem research.
In this role, you'll manage and maintain advanced outdoor research facilities, including the Whole Tree Chambers (WTC), rainout shelters (ROS), PACE, and other experimental sites, while ensuring the smooth operation of environmental sensors, data systems, and field equipment.
Working closely with researchers, students, and other technical staff, you'll play a vital role in delivering technical support to high-quality, well-controlled experiments that help us understand how environmental factors shape ecosystems. This role offers a unique mix of technical work, field operations, problem-solving, and collaborative support.
Key Responsibilities
* Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot environmental instruments and sensor systems.
* Install and connect data-logging equipment and ensure accurate data communication.
* Support the setup and delivery of complex field experiments.
* Oversee site maintenance, pest/weed control, and safe operation of machinery.
* Collaborate with the Australian Plant Phenomics Network at Western.
* Ensure compliance with safety requirements through audits, inductions, and documentation.
This is a full-time, ongoing position based at our Hawkesbury campus.

About You
You are a technically skilled, solutions-focused professional with a strong understanding of field research environments. You enjoy variety in your work, from hands-on maintenance and equipment setup to working collaboratively with researchers and students.
You will bring:
* A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline with substantial postgraduate experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Demonstrated experience managing complex field-based plant research experiments, including site maintenance and safe operation of field machinery.
* Proven experience with environmental and plant-related instrumentation such as neutron probes, soil moisture sensors, and sampling tools.
* A current Working at Heights certification, or willingness to undertake recognised training.
* Strong analytical, planning, and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and solve problems effectively.
* Clear communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships and maintain precise documentation.

Remuneration: HEW Level 8 - $138,029 to $153,227 p.a. (comprising base salary of $116,636 to $12,479 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading).
