Ports and Maritime at Beca Beca has been supporting and providing maritime consultancy services to government, industry and defence clients for over 80 years – and over this time the Ports and Maritime team have developed a keen understanding of the types of solutions that meet the demands of the users and key stakeholders. Our multidisciplinary teams deliver integrated solutions to ports and maritime projects, drawing upon experience from projects both internationally and across Australia. Services include all stages of a project – from early planning, studies and concept work, to detailed design and construction assistance and management.
The opportunity At Beca we are seeing strong growth in our Ports and Maritime business, with increasing demand in Australia, Current Zealand, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. To help accelerate this growth we are seeking a
Senior Coastal Engineer
to be based in Melbourne. This role will work closely with our Melbourne‑based lead in Ports, Coastal and River Engineering on a range of projects across the region. Beca is an industry leader in the engineering, planning, design and construction management of maritime structures. We specialise in all types of marine facilities – from container terminals, bulk facilities and shipyards to coastal protection, beach nourishment and breakwaters – and continue to be at the forefront of innovation by developing the infrastructure required for the safe, efficient, sustainable and cost‑effective operation of tomorrow’s ports and resilient coastal front infrastructure.
About You You will hold a Civil Engineering degree with knowledge of coastal processes and the design of coastal infrastructure. You are a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng or equivalent) and a Registered Professional Engineer in Victoria (RPEV) and Queensland (RPEQ). You are keen for an opportunity to build on your experience in port and coastal infrastructure projects in a consulting environment, balancing technical design work with field investigations, modelling and project delivery, and remaining flexible to work across diverse projects in ports, coastal, estuarine and river hydraulics.
In This Role You Will
Be a key part of our dynamic and innovative team.
Lead technical delivery as a Design Manager and/or Work Package Manager to create safe and robust technical solutions.
Use your experience of maritime industry best practice to deliver both domestic (Australian) and international port and maritime facilities and/or coastal defences.
Be familiar with Australian and other local standards applicable to the design development of marine structures.
Be familiar with international best practice and international codes and standards applicable to the maritime sector, including British Standards, PIANC, OCIMF, USACE.
Be competent in conducting structural design calculations both by hand and using the latest computer software packages available in the industry.
Be conversant in managing and mentoring junior team members to deliver projects on time and within agreed budgets.
Have good verbal and written communication skills to be able to collaborate with our clients and prepare deliverables.
Flexibility, proactivity, and an understanding of the importance of teamwork in a consultancy setting are essential attributes in this role. You will possess well developed people skills and the ability to display initiative.
