Becker Watt Lawyers is seeking a commercial litigation lawyer to join our building and construction law team. This role is suited to a lawyer who enjoys disputes, strategy, client contact, and the commercial realities of the construction industry.
The work will focus on building and construction disputes, including residential and commercial construction matters, payment disputes, defective works claims, contract disputes, QBCC issues, adjudications, tribunal matters, and court proceedings.
The successful candidate will work closely with clients, builders, contractors, subcontractors, homeowners, developers, and industry participants to provide practical legal advice and strong dispute resolution support.
Key Responsibilities
* Acting in building and construction disputes, including contract disputes, defective work claims, payment disputes, delay claims, and termination disputes.
* Advising clients on their rights and obligations under construction contracts and relevant legislation.
* Preparing correspondence, letters of demand, pleadings, submissions, affidavits, evidence, and other litigation documents.
* Managing QCAT, court, adjudication, mediation, and dispute resolution processes.
* Advising on QBCC matters, including licensing, disciplinary issues, directions to rectify, and insurance-related disputes.
* Conducting negotiations and assisting clients to resolve disputes commercially where possible.
* Managing client relationships and communicating clearly with clients about strategy, risks, costs, and likely outcomes.
Ideal Candidate
* Experience in commercial litigation, ideally with exposure to building and construction disputes.
* Strong drafting, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
* A practical and commercial approach to litigation.
* Confidence dealing directly with clients.
* An ability to manage competing deadlines and run matters with appropriate supervision.
* Strong attention to detail.
* Good judgment and the ability to assess risk, evidence, costs, and commercial outcomes.
* An interest in the building and construction industry.
* Experience with QCAT, courts, adjudication, or QBCC matters will be highly regarded.
