Offer description

This organisation offers community care for Australia's most common life‐shortening genetic condition that affects the respiratory, digestive and reproductive system because of a malfunction in the exocrine system, responsible for producing saliva, sweat, tears and mucus. It causes the fluids to thicken which leads to irreversible damage of the pancreas and lungs. There are symptoms, including persistent and chronic lung infections, breathing complications, digestive issues, excessive sweating, compromised immune systems, persistent cough and poor absorption of nutrients leading to malnutrition, inability to maintain a healthy weight, diabetes, bone disease and infertility. Lung failure is the major cause of death for someone who has this disease with the average life expectancy of 38 years. There is no cure.

Over 3,500 people across Australia have it. A much wider circle of family, carers, friends, partners, schools and workplaces share the impact of this condition. It is demanding and requires a vigorous regime of daily physiotherapy, multiple medications, frequent medical appointments and hospitalisations for the duration of the person's life.

The organisations mission is to promote awareness of the disease, provide support, advocacy and information to the community, and fund medical research into the fight against it.

The organisations provides a range of programs and services to individuals and families living with it. The Programs and Support Services team, strive to increase community engagement to optimise the physical and emotional wellbeing of our community members. We do this through the provision of practical assistance, social work support, counselling assistance, equipment provision, financial relief programs, advocacy and education. Our organisation also provides time limited funding for families to enjoy and optimise time together as well as emergency accommodation to attend hospital admissions and outpatient appointments.

Our Programs and Support Services staff provide hands on practical support either in person at clinic, in the community, over the phone or via email to best support, the individual circumstances of the person with the disease. We receive referrals from Specialty Services medical staff, community organisations or from people with the disease directly for support and assistance. We offer counselling, education, health coaching, assistance with Centrelink/NDIS/support services, end‐of‐life support, and requests for access to equipment and emergency financial assistance.
