Senior Software Engineer – Data & API Platforms

We are partnering with a high-profile Federal Government organisation undergoing a major digital and regulatory transformation program. An opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join a cross-functional delivery team focused on modernising large-scale data and API capabilities.
This role is ideal for a senior engineer who enjoys building high-performance distributed systems, working across modern cloud-native technologies, and contributing to mission-critical platforms with significant national impact.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Develop and deliver high-quality API and data pipeline solutions aligned to approved architecture and engineering best practices
* Support technical release coordination for both internal and external delivery activities
* Monitor, manage, and proactively mitigate risks relating to system performance and API availability
* Collaborate closely with engineers, testers, analysts, and stakeholders within agile delivery teams
* Contribute to broader platform uplift initiatives and continuous improvement activities
* Build scalable, resilient applications leveraging both SQL and NoSQL data sources
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
* 5+ years’ experience in Senior Software Engineering roles
* Strong Java development experience
* Commercial experience with:
o Apache Spark
o Kafka
o Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana)
* Experience designing efficient processing algorithms and optimising application performance
* Experience with containerisation and orchestration tools including Kubernetes and Rancher
* Experience with CI/CD and continuous delivery tools such as Jenkins
* Strong understanding of automated testing frameworks
* Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional agile teams
Nice to Have
* Experience working within large-scale government or enterprise transformation environments
* Exposure to highly available API ecosystems and large data processing environments
Security Requirements
Candidates must hold, or be eligible to obtain, a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance. Applicants with an active Baseline clearance and ability to upgrade are encouraged to apply.
Working Arrangements
* Hybrid model
* Minimum 2 days onsite per week in Canberra or Sydney
* 12-month initial contract with potential extension options
Qualifications
* Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
