Linguist – Documentation and Resource Development

Part-time (0.5 FTE) | Fixed-Term position to June 2027

Help shape the future for First Nations language Communities

We are now looking for a Linguist – Documentation & Resource Development to help translate rich language knowledge into practical tools, resources, and learning experiences that language communities can use and sustain.

The Pama Language Centre plays a critical role in this work - supporting language documentation, revitalisation and transmission across Cape York Peninsula.

About the Role

This is a unique role that sits at the intersection of language documentation and language revival.

You will lead and contribute to the transcription and analysis of primary language materials - including approximately 5,000 pages of Oko Wurriima field notes - while transforming this work into accessible, community-ready resources.

Working across the Teaching to Learn and Language Legacy Data and Access Strengthening projects, you will support both deep linguistic analysis and practical resource development, helping to ensure that language knowledge is preserved, shared, and brought back into everyday use.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead transcription and linguistic analysis of archival materials
* Build and manage language corpora and lexical databases
* Develop high-quality language learning resources (word lists, phrase books, grammar summaries, lesson content)
* Translate complex linguistic data into accessible formats for learners and communities
* Contribute to digital tools and assets (including lesson content and app-based learning resources)
* Support and mentor language champions and language community learnersWork closely with Elders and language experts, ensuring all outputs are ICIP-safe and community-led

About You

You are a linguist who combines strong technical expertise with a commitment to community-led language revival.

We're looking for someone who brings:

* A degree in Linguistics (or similar), with strong analytical capability
* Experience working with primary language data, including transcription and annotation
* Proficiency with linguistic tools such as FLEx, ELAN or similar
* Experience developing language learning resources for language community use
* Thorough understanding of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) principles
* Experience working respectfully with First Nations language communities
* Familiarity with Australian languages - particularly Pama-Nyungan languages
* Blue Card and ability to successfully complete a Police Check.

You'll also be self‐directed, highly organised, and comfortable working across a remote, collaborative team environment.
