Responsibilities
* Work within a busy emergency department delivering culturally safe, high‐quality care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and families.
* Support patient assessment, triage, monitoring, and care planning using clinical judgement.
* Act as a cultural broker between patients, families, and the clinical team.
* Advocate for culturally safe care and support informed decision‐making.
* Liaise with nursing, medical, allied health staff to coordinate care.
* Support discharge planning and referrals to inpatient teams, outpatient services, ACCHOs, and community supports; follow up to reduce re‐presentation.
* Collaborate with other Aboriginal Health Practitioners, participate in multidisciplinary discussions, and contribute to quality improvement and cultural capability.
Typical Day
* Engage with patients and families in the ED, often during times of stress or crisis.
* Support assessments, monitor patient wellbeing, assist with care planning.
* Advocate and support culturally safe care and informed decision‐making.
* Liaise with nursing, medical, and allied health staff.
* Support discharge planning and referrals.
* Follow up patients to support continuity of care.
Qualifications
* Aboriginality – Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status.
* Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice) and a current authority to practice as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
* Strong cultural knowledge, connection to community and ability to provide culturally safe support.
* Excellent communication and relationship‐building skills with patients, families, and staff.
* Ability to advocate confidently for Aboriginal patients.
* Professional boundaries, confidentiality, and reliability.
* Willingness to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Additional Skills and Knowledge
* Hospital systems, clinical processes, and documentation requirements.
* Specific clinical or scope‐of‐practice skills (supported through training and supervision).
* Local service pathways, referral processes, and community networks.
* Use of electronic medical records and reporting systems.
