Make a real difference in community

Victoria Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is seeking a passionate and community‐connected Client Services Officer (CSO) to join our Criminal Law Practice in Warrnambool. This is a meaningful opportunity to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients as they navigate the legal system, while working in a culturally safe, community‐controlled organisation committed to justice, advocacy and self‐determination. As a CSO, you'll play a vital role in bridging the gap between clients, lawyers, courts, and community services — ensuring people feel supported, informed and culturally safe throughout their legal journey.

About us

The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is an Aboriginal Community‐Controlled Organisation (ACCO) and the state's only specialist legal and support service dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Since 1973, VALS has provided culturally safe legal advice, representation and wrap‐around support across criminal, family, civil and human rights law, youth justice and specialist litigation. We also deliver broader support services including a 24/7 Custody Notification Service, transitional housing support, family violence programs, community legal education and client advocacy. At VALS, we are committed to cultural safety, social justice, equity and inclusion.

About the role

The Client Services Officer is a key cultural and practical support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients engaging with the criminal justice system. Working closely with lawyers and other internal and external service providers, you will:

* provide culturally safe client support before, during and after court
* help clients understand legal processes in plain language
* identify non‐legal needs and risks
* provide short‐term intensive casework and warm referrals
* advocate for clients with services and agencies
* strengthen connections between VALS, community and local support networks

This is a highly rewarding role for someone who is empathetic, proactive, organised and deeply committed to community wellbeing.

What you'll be doing
* Support clients to navigate court processes and legal appointments
* Attend court with clients and provide practical and cultural support
* Assess client needs, identify risks and coordinate referrals to relevant services
* Undertake welfare checks, client transport and other community‐based support activities where appropriate
* Work collaboratively with solicitors, paralegals, community services and government agencies
* Maintain strong local service knowledge and referral pathways
* Build and maintain trusted relationships with Aboriginal communities
* Represent VALS at meetings, forums and community engagement activities
* Complete case notes, reports and administrative tasks accurately and on time
What we're looking for
* Strong connections to and experience working with Aboriginal communities
* A sound understanding of the Victorian legal system and the barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
* Experience in community services, client support, casework or advocacy
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality
* The ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Strong organisation and time‐management skills
* Confidence using Microsoft Office and client management systems
Qualifications / experience

You will ideally hold a certificate, diploma or degree in community services, social work or a related field. We also welcome applicants with strong relevant experience in the community services sector and a willingness to undertake further study with support from VALS.

Mandatory requirements
* A current Employee Working with Children Check
* A valid Victorian Driver's Licence
* A National Criminal History Check
* The right to work in Australia
Benefits
* The opportunity to work in a respected Aboriginal Community‐Controlled Organisation
* A role that directly contributes to justice and community outcomes
* Supportive, culturally safe and values‐driven team environment
* Salary packaging benefits
* Professional development and learning opportunities
* The chance to be part of meaningful systemic change
