Qualifications

* Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
* Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport, preferably as a Head/Varsity.
* Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continually examines new theories and procedures relevant to the field.
* Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
* Attends professional development opportunities (clinics, etc.) relative to the respective sport.
* Pursues and obtains membership in the state level coaching association of the respective sport.

Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while modeling socially acceptable character development, self‐discipline, confidence, and pride of accomplishment. The coach also upgrades knowledge and skills through clinics, observations, consultation, etc.

General Overview

* The success of athletic programs strongly influences community image; public exposure brings pressure for winning performance, but sportsmanship and mental health objectives should not be overridden.
* The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process concerns.
* Coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment where coverage is lacking.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Has thorough knowledge of athletic policies approved by the Griffith Public Schools' Board of Education and ensures implementation by all staff.
* Interprets existing system, state, and league regulations.
* Understands administrative command and refers requests or grievances through proper channels; attends required meetings.
* Supervises student athletes from start of practice to end, ensuring all participants have left.

Staff Responsibilities

* Establishes philosophy, skills, and techniques; designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
* Maintains discipline, addresses grievances, and promotes morale and cooperation.
* Performs other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal.

Administrative Duties

* Assists in preparation for scheduled events and practices, adheres to facility times, coordinates with maintenance and staff.
* Documents state and system requirements: physical examinations, parental consent, eligibility.
* Safeguards equipment sites and protects assignments.
* Recommends policy, method, or procedural changes.

Responsibilities to Students

* Serves as mentor, promoting character traits (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship).
* Provides constant attention to grades and conduct.
* Offers assistance, guidance, and safeguards.
* Provides training rules and sport regulations; ensures participation attendance.
* Completes injury paperwork promptly.
* Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
* Determines discipline, due process procedures, and contacts parents for ineligible/dropped students.
* Assists athletes in college or advanced education selection.

Finance and Equipment

* Recommends equipment specifications; operates within budget.
* Collects cost of lost equipment; manages issuance, storage, and inventory.
* Properly marks and identifies equipment.
* Monitors equipment rooms, authorizes access.
* Ensures athletes use authorized areas at appropriate times.
* Inspects locker rooms; monitors cleanliness.
* Secures building elements before leaving.
* Instills respect for equipment and property.

Public Relations

* Organizes preseason meetings with parents, coaches, players, guests.
* Promotes sport via recruiting and media outreach.
* Prepares professional communications to local media.
* Maintains good relations with media, booster club, parents, volunteers, and fans.
