About the role
AEMO's Systems Engineering Group is responsible for keeping the power system technically capable of supporting Australia's energy transition.
These responsibilities include performing technical analysis to assess future system needs, integration and operational enablement of distributed energy resources, identifying capability gaps, developing operational solutions and procuring system services to close these gaps, supporting long‐term technical planning, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
The transition in the Energy market is requiring the continued connection of vast quantities of recent generation and storage plant.
There are currently over projects, representing over 55 GW of capacity, in the AEMO connections pipeline.
As a technical leader in the Systems Engineering group, you will be reviewing the connections pipeline with an operational point of view to help identify any upcoming challenges, prior to commissioning commencing, and to assist the broader Operations division in developing solutions for these issues.
You will also be the key interface between the Onboarding and Connections group and the Operations Division.
Responsibilities
* Providing advice to the Operations Division on the impact of upcoming large generation, storage, and load connections on power system security and operations, including remedial action and special protection schemes.
* Ensuring effective handover of connection projects to ongoing operation, ensuring completeness and accuracy of information and its transition to operational systems and databases.
* Working with the NEM Onboarding and Connections team to ensure smooth progress of projects from assessment to commissioning with regards to NEM operations, and providing assistance to Operations Planning team with issues arising during commissioning.
* Overseeing forums and other processes to collate, summarise and adjudicate the views of Operations division on connection activity, and providing input to connection processes and reform initiatives where required to ensure operational impacts are adequately addressed.
* Supporting divisional process improvement through engagement with the Operations Technology and Reform program.
Qualifications
* Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, with significant experience in power systems engineering roles, preferably related to generator connection or power system operations.
* Chartered (CPEng/RPEng) or actively working towards professional engineering accreditation.
* Experience working on complex power system security and operational issues, especially having to produce practical solutions to address high impact problems.
* Experience commissioning grid‐connected resources such as generation, battery energy storage systems and data centre loads.
* Experience in power system modelling for planning, operations and connections, including knowledge of NEM connection and alteration processes.
