The Opportunity
Join a groundbreaking Australian Research Council Discovery Project - Precision receptor-specific miticides for safeguarding Australian bees. This project tackles one of the biggest threats to global bee populations by developing targeted miticides that eliminate Varroa mites while keeping bees safe. You will contribute to world-first solutions using cutting-edge approaches in bioinformatics, molecular cloning of Varroa ligand-gated ion channel targets, miticide design via molecular docking, functional assays, dsRNA design, and in vitro and in vivo testing of novel miticides. The work involves four collaborating sites: UniSC, University of Queensland, University of Sydney, and the Swiss Bee Research Centre, with outcomes that have environmental and economic impact for Australia.
In this role, you'll play a lead part in project management and delivery, from study design and data analysis to publications and reporting. You'll coordinate complex, multi-site research, contribute to student supervision, and foster collaborative relationships across diverse research teams. Strong communication, data acquisition, and analysis skills are essential to drive this project forward and shape real-world solutions to protect pollinators and support agricultural sustainability.
You will:
Conduct innovative research
: lead design and execution of research projects aligned with your expertise and UniSC's priorities. Use rigorous methodologies and stay current with field advancements.
Publish research findings
: disseminate results through high-impact journals, conferences, and scholarly outlets. Contribute to UniSC's research reputation.
Collaborate with the research team
: engage in collaborative efforts, foster a productive research environment, and contribute to interdisciplinary projects.
Secure research funding
: participate in securing grants and funding opportunities to support projects; articulate potential impact to attract external support.
Contribute to research impact
: communicate outcomes to stakeholders, including academic peers, policymakers, and the public, demonstrating societal impact.
About you
You are a motivated researcher with a strong track record of high-quality publications, methodological expertise, and a collaborative approach. You pursue research funding proactively and are dedicated to delivering impactful work that addresses real-world challenges and makes a lasting difference in your field.
You will possess
Completion of a doctoral qualification in a relevant field with experience as a laboratory-based researcher;
Foundational knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and pharmacology. Expertise in neurotransmitter receptors or parasitology is desirable;
Demonstrated ability in molecular/cellular biology techniques, including RNA preparation, cDNA synthesis, PCR, molecular cloning, plasmid preparation, mutagenesis, DNA sequencing, and in vitro transcription of mRNA;
Experience in designing and implementing in vitro or in vivo insecticide/miticide assays;
Refereed publications and evidence of quality outputs with clear attribution of individual contributions;
External funding awarded in the last five years (internal grants considered for fellowship applicants);
Esteem measures such as keynote talks, invitations to present, prizes/awards, and committee memberships;
Technology transfer and outreach activities (including engagement with external partners);
Supervision of research students (considerations include supervision of higher degree research students and completions).
