RCH has cared for the children and young people of Victoria for more than 150 years since it was founded in 1870. A full range of paediatrics and adolescent health services are provided plus tertiary and quaternary care for the most critically ill and medically complex patients in Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and other states around Australia and overseas. The Hospital has more than 6,000 staff, a budget of $850M, 12 wards and 350 beds. Annually, the RCH has 300,000+ Specialist Clinic appointments, 90,000+ Emergency Department presentations and 20,000 elective surgeries.

About The Role

There are two Koori Social and Emotional Wellbeing Officer roles available as part of this recruitment. The first is an ongoing, full-time (1.0EFT) position and the second is a 12-month fixed term, full-time (1.0EFT) position. Located at all RCH Mental Health sites: Parkville, Travancore, St Albans and Tarneit.

Role

* This is an Aboriginal identified role (as per s12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic)).
* Demonstrated experience in assessing social, emotional and cultural needs and in the delivery of social and emotional wellbeing/mental health services to Aboriginal children, young people, and/or community members.
* Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal children, young people and/or families experiencing poor mental health and wellbeing.

Within a multidisciplinary team setting, you will work both autonomously and alongside mental health clinicians to provide high quality, culturally appropriate support to promote engagement and best mental health outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people and their families. You will work with clients and patients in both the community mental health service and the Banksia adolescent inpatient unit to provide advocacy, appropriate information regarding services and the rights and responsibilities of the consumer to ensure a complete understanding of the young person's journey through the RCH Mental Health service.

Another significant aspect of the role is active engagement in community development activities, including working with ACCHOs (Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations) and other community agencies to strengthen partnerships, improve access to services for Aboriginal children and young people, and to promote cultural healing and capacity-building within RCH Mental Health staff.

Your Skills And Experience

* Relevant professional experience in an Aboriginal health care or Aboriginal child and family services setting.
* Demonstrated understanding of the social, economic and transgenerational issues impacting on Aboriginal mental health and wellbeing in Aboriginal communities and families including a sound knowledge of Aboriginal culture, values and history.
* Demonstrated effectiveness in working in true partnership with other community mental health teams and community/family welfare agencies e.g. Aboriginal and mainstream services, to plan and implement effective interventions for Aboriginal children and young people experiencing complex mental health problems.
* Demonstrated ability in assessing social emotional and cultural needs, making referrals and planning support services appropriate to identified needs.

About The Department

RCH Mental Health is a Level 5 tertiary Infant, Child and Family Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Service and comprises community and hospital-based services. This includes three multidisciplinary community teams which are based in Travancore, St Albans and Hoppers Crossing. This position will be primarily based in the location listed above; you may be required to work across sites should the needs of the service require this. Our Community Mental Health Programs are undergoing an exciting transformation and expansion as we implement the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System.

Other Requirements

* Current National Criminal Record Check, or willing to obtain.
* Valid Working with Children Check.
* Compliance with RCHs "Staff Immunisation - Prevention of Vaccine Preventable Diseases" procedure.
* Valid Victorian Driver's Licence.
