Overview
We are looking for an experienced Software Architect to help develop an integrated metabolic data platform at the world‐class Metabolic Cybernetics Lab, Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney. The role is full‐stack – backend, frontend, APIs, infrastructure – and will partner closely with researchers to translate scientific needs into reliable, scalable software. The position offers an hourly rate of $70.63 per hour and is based on‐site, starting as soon as possible.
Responsibilities
* Develop and maintain the multi‐omics platform across backend, frontend, and API layers.
* Contribute to database schema design, data modelling, and integration of complex experimental datasets.
* Support deployment infrastructure, containerisation, and data management systems.
* Build internal tools and automated workflows that improve research productivity and reproducibility.
* Work closely with researchers to translate scientific requirements into practical software and database solutions.
* Maintain documentation, testing practices, version control, and coding standards.
* Ensure data integrity, governance, and secure handling of research data.
* Participate in technical discussions, troubleshooting, and continuous platform improvement.
* Explore how AI tools can accelerate development and improve platform performance.
Essential Qualifications
* Solid full‐stack software engineering experience.
* Experience with relational databases, schema design, and data modelling.
* Comfort working with structured, complex datasets.
* Familiarity with backend systems, REST or GraphQL APIs, and modern development workflows.
* Experience with containerisation and deployment (Docker, cloud, or HPC environments).
* Strong problem‐solving skills and clear communication, including with non‐technical stakeholders.
* Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment.
Desirable Qualifications
* Hands‐on experience with PostgreSQL, Django, GraphQL, or Next.js.
* Experience with biological, proteomics, or multi‐omics datasets.
* Background contributing to research software or scientific data platforms.
* Interest in computational biology, bioinformatics, or research data infrastructure.
* Experience applying AI tools to improve developer productivity or accelerate delivery.
