The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and Department of Health are seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Head of Department Trauma vacancy.
RHH is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. It collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions, focusing on delivering excellence in healthcare to improve outcomes for patients, workforce, and the Tasmanian community.
The RHH Trauma Service has two key functions: clinical service provision for injured patients and trauma system clinical governance.
As consultant‑led multidisciplinary team, it provides timely, evidence‑based care from arrival until safe transfer or discharge. The service emphasizes nurse‑led case management and allied health involvement to achieve continuity of care and maximise patient wellbeing.
The clinical governance function includes operation of the statewide trauma registry, development and revision of trauma clinical guidelines, statewide trauma education program, and community outreach and injury prevention programs.
Location: Hobart, Tasmania.
Responsibilities
* The Staff Specialist will provide specialist medical services to the Royal Hobart Hospital within the limits of specified clinical privileges and will undertake work within allocated clinical support portfolios aligned to the strategic priorities of the Trauma Service.
* The Staff Specialist reports to the Director of Trauma, at the Royal Hobart Hospital, and is expected to perform the duties allocated, consistent with organisational values, and will promote, role‑model and support those values in the workplace.
* Ensure consistent, safe, effective, evidence‑based and patient‑centred care to patients admitted under the RHH Trauma Service, including contributing to the administration, oversight and governance of the Trauma Service within the assigned portfolio of responsibilities which may also include rostering, leave planning, committee work and junior medical officer supervision.

Compensation
Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award: A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $222,789 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $305,539 with further salary increments available.
Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $309,222 - $319,701 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.
* Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $17,483 pro rata per annum.
* On call allowance % of Base Salary.
* Managerial Allowance.
* All other allowances as per current Award.
* And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on‑call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment
Fixed term part‑time day work (with on‑call), working 38 hours per fortnight commencing 4 August 2026 for 36 months.
Essential Requirements
* Holds specialist registration; or
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

Desirable Requirements
* Significant clinical and operational experience as a practicing clinician in major trauma service
* Experience in related fields including, but not limited to, retrieval medicine, major burns care, medical education (including simulation) and research
