About the Role
On behalf of our client, a well-established, third-generation family-owned business with over 30 years of specialised experience in the poultry industry, we are seeking a dedicated Senior Poultry Farmer. Our client operates two farms with a combined capacity of 460,000 hens, including specialised rearing houses for chicks. The family-run operation prides itself on hands-on management across animal production, operations, and human resources. We are looking for a professional who will uphold their legacy of excellent quality and help supply fresh eggs to bakeries, retailers, wholesalers, and the catering industry across the region.
Responsibilities:
Breeding & Livestock Management:
• Oversee the breeding, rearing, and daily care of a large-scale laying hen flock (up to 460,000 hens) to optimise egg production.
• Implement and manage structured breeding, feeding, and nutrition programs tailored to the specific needs of high-production layers.
Health, Biosecurity & Welfare:
• Proactively monitor flock health and welfare, identify early signs of disease or stress, and execute timely interventions.
• Develop, maintain, and enforce rigorous biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks and manage environmental risks across both farm sites.
Feed, Water & Pasture Management:
• Ensure continuous supply of clean water and coordinate the provision of nutritionally balanced feed for hens at all life stages.
• Where applicable, supervise the growing and maintenance of fodder crops or alternative forage to support poultry health and condition.
Operational & Infrastructure Oversight:
• Organise daily farming routines including egg collection, grading, and packaging for delivery to formal and informal markets.
• Direct the maintenance and construction of essential infrastructure: sheds, pens, water supply systems, fencing, and irrigation networks.
Logistics, Sales & Data Management:
• Arrange the sale, purchase, and transport of eggs, as well as the sourcing and movement of poultry as required.
• Maintain accurate production records, monitor market activity), and plan output to meet weekly minimum delivery targets (e.g., 5+ cases per customer).
Technology, Finance & Staff Supervision:
• Oversee farm technology systems for data collection and analysis, using insights to improve efficiency and egg quality.
• Support business capital management (budgeting, taxation, debt/loan coordination) and may select, train, and supervise staff and contractors.
Requirements
* Minimum 2 years of full-time, hands-on experience in a senior poultry or livestock production role (egg production preferred).
* Relevant formal qualification in agriculture, animal science, or poultry husbandry.
* Proven ability to manage large-scale layer operations and implement biosecurity strategies.
* Strong organisational, record-keeping, and team leadership skills.
