Overview

We are seeking to establish a pool of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2026 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2027. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

The Role

The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) plays a crucial role at Newton Moore Senior High School in fostering a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment where Indigenous students feel comfortable attending school each day. As a key liaison between the school and community, the AIEO works closely with teachers, students and families to support wellbeing, strengthen engagement and promote culturally responsive practices that empower Indigenous students to learn, grow and reach their full potential.

Through mentoring and pastoral care, the AIEO supports Indigenous students to build confidence, develop a strong sense of identity and celebrate their culture, particularly for those at risk of disengagement. With a deep understanding of Indigenous culture, history and community, the AIEO brings a vital perspective to the school, promoting respect, understanding and cultural pride at the heart of everything we do.

In addition to supporting students, the AIEO works collaboratively with staff to build understanding and capability in the most effective ways to support Indigenous learners. The role also includes working closely with the local Indigenous community, supporting attendance, contributing to policy and program development, and providing cultural guidance and orientation to staff to ensure culturally safe and responsive practice across the school.

Eligibility

To work with us, you must:

* be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
* obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start; and
* consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education's Screening Unit before you start.

* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of culturally responsive strategies that support the wellbeing, engagement and learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
* Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and liaise with parents/caregivers, families, teachers and community members and assist teachers to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students' needs.
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
* Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of culturally responsive education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or allied health professionals.
