Offer description

Board Outlook is looking for a sharp, proactive and detail‐oriented In‐House Legal Counsel to join us and take ownership of our legal function.

Board Outlook was founded in 2019 on the belief that we could build software to help more boards become great boards, for the collective benefit of directors, shareholders, employees and society as a whole. Since that time, we have worked with hundreds of boards and thousands of directors.

This is a rare opportunity for an ambitious, aspiring Head of Legal in Enterprise SaaS to learn fast and grow in a meaningful mission‐driven startup, in a highly flexible environment.

Below we've included more detail on:

- Why you want to work for Board Outlook
- About the role (and you)
- Location
- Compensation
- About our hiring process
- How to apply

1. Why you want to work for Board Outlook
2. 1 What we do

Board Outlook is a board performance platform designed specifically to enhance board effectiveness. Through rich diagnostics and powerful analytics, we provide boards with a holistic overview of their performance, helping them to understand areas for improvement and areas to optimise.

We deliver hundreds of board performance processes globally and our clients range from large listed companies at the top of the FTSE 100 and ASX 100 to public sector and not‐for‐profit organisations.

1. 2 Working at Board Outlook

There are five values that form the foundation of our team ethos. Everyone we work with must display:

- Simplicity: We prioritise simplicity and reduce complexity.
- Attention to detail: Details matter, and we take pride in getting them right.
- Urgency: We commit and execute with urgency, ensuring swift action.
- Generous investment: We invest generously in each other's growth and success.
- Optimism and ambition: We pursue ambitious goals and strive for outsized wins.

The stronger the points above describe you and the kind of people you like to work with, the more likely it is you'll succeed at Board Outlook.

1. 3 Ambitious growth plan

We have set ambitious targets and are well positioned to pursue rapid global and product expansion. We are already working with clients in the UK, Middle East, APAC, North America, South America and Europe. Joining us now means making an impact at a critical stage of growth, where your contributions will have direct influence on our trajectory.

1. About this role
2. 1 Why we're hiring In‐House Legal Counsel

We're looking for a sharp, proactive and detail‐oriented individual to join Board Outlook and take ownership of our legal function.

As our first dedicated legal hire, this is an ideal role for a commercially minded lawyer with an interest in Enterprise SaaS, who is excited to shape and scale the legal function within a global, growing business. The role combines traditional in‐house legal responsibilities — such as negotiating commercial contracts and advising on privacy law — with hands‐on ownership of how the function evolves into the future as we continue to scale globally.

1. 2 What your first six months will look like

We expect you to deliver meaningful outcomes early. In your first 90 days, you will:

Legal Advisory & Commercial

- Draft, review and negotiate a range of commercial agreements, including SaaS customer contracts, partnership agreements, DPAs, and NDAs.
- Advise internal teams on legal and regulatory issues, with a focus on privacy, IP, and commercial risk.
- Act as the primary legal advisor on customer and vendor engagements, including security and privacy‐related legal terms.
- Preparation of standardised employment contracts.

Privacy & Data Protection

- Advise on all aspects of data protection, including GDPR and Australian Privacy Act compliance.
- Maintain and enhance privacy policies, notices, data maps, and consent mechanisms.
- Manage privacy incidents or DSARs, and serve as the internal point of contact for privacy inquiries.

Scaling

- Design and implement scalable legal processes and workflows, including contract lifecycle automation, template standardisation, and self‐service tools, to reduce friction and improve turnaround times.
- Establish KPIs and reporting frameworks to measure legal team performance and workload trends, enabling data‐driven resource allocation, prioritisation, and decision‐making as the company scales.

1. About you

We're looking for someone with 6+ years of post‐qualification legal experience, ideally including in‐house experience in a SaaS or tech business, strong working knowledge of privacy and data protection laws (especially GDPR), familiarity with ISO 27001, SOC 2, or similar frameworks, and experience in a start‐up environment will be favourably considered.

You will also bring:

- Strong commercial judgment, drafting skills, and attention to detail.
- Practical, solutions‐focused approach to balancing risk and business outcomes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Comfortable working autonomously in a fast‐paced setting, while collaborating closely with Product, Engineering, Sales, Client Experience and Leadership.

1. Location

This is a flexible role which we are happy to consider remote candidates for from either Australia or the UK. Our head office is in Melbourne, with a team in London who you will be supporting. We work flexibly, but expect regular collaboration across time‐zones and international travel for key meetings and events.

We are only considering candidates with full working rights in either Australia or the UK.

1. Compensation

Our compensation package for this role is AUD $140-160k (FTE) + Super. We also offer a generous ESOP (share option) grant for permanent employees. The ESOP gives employees meaningful financial participation and upside in the success of the business.

1. Hiring process

Our hiring process is designed to test three things:

- Capability to deliver on the role requirements (including a short practical test).
- Approach and drivers: explored through interviews and references.
- Cultural fit: tested against our target behaviours.

You can expect three interviews plus a short practical test. We respect your time and typically get back to candidates within days, not weeks.

1. How to apply

To apply, please send a short email with your CV and a written outline of your relevant experience to talent@boardoutlook.com. Please include "Legal Counsel" in the subject line.
