About You
* Must be studying as an Undergraduate towards a Science degree with biomedically related subjects.
* Must have completed the first year of study and be able to do subsequent years of Undergraduate study part‐time.
* Attention to detail with an aptitude for analytical work by microscopy and/or digital image analysis using relevant software applications.
* Ability to work in a team environment.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills liaising with staff and internal/external clinical referrers.
* Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office, including data‐entry into databases.
What you'll be doing
The Department provides a range of Cytogenetic/Cytogenomic testing services with over 10,000 referred tests per annum. The purpose of this role is to support a busy Cytogenetic pathology laboratory and also provide a great opportunity to access a hospital scientist traineeship with valuable working experience. The traineeship will ideally suit a person who has successfully completed the first year of their degree. This is an entry‐level position where supervised training will be provided in various aspects of Cytogenetic testing, including specimen collection and handling, laboratory information management system (LIMS) data‐entry, general laboratory duties, record keeping and maintenance of equipment. The role will expand to performing cytogenetic tests with data analysis and interpretation of results; e.g. G‐band karyotyping, fluorescent in‐situ hybridisation (FISH), quantitative fluorescent PCR (QF‐PCR), PCR analysis, and chromosome microarray testing. The material tested may include human cells or DNA from blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, chorionic villus, solid tumours and formalin‐fixed tissues.
The successful applicant will be enrolled part‐time in a BSc degree comprising genetic and biomedically relevant subjects, while working as a non‐permanent, trainee hospital scientist in clinical cytogenetics. Time off is given each week during term, for attendance at university classes. Trainee positions are reviewed after each university semester and are subject to maintenance of satisfactory academic progress and work performance. The trainee position continues until completion of the trainee's BSc degree.
