Location Profile

Mildura Specialist School is located in the remote Sunraysia area in close proximity to the New South Wales and South Australian borders. The school serves a large and remote geographical area, with a catchment that extends beyond the township of Ouyen in the south, Robinvale to the east and westward towards South Australia, and includes students from NSW in the north.

The school is the only specialist facility in the area, providing a major resource for students with an intellectual disability between the ages of five and eighteen years. Students are taught in small groups by teaching staff, many with special education qualifications, supported by teacher assistants and paramedical staff. Speech, occupational and physiotherapists provide consultancy services for programs.

Curriculum is based on the Victorian Curriculum and assessment is based on Individual Learning Plan goals. In their last three years of school students concentrate on a transitional program for post‐school life which may include vocational programs and/or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning. The school integrates students part‐time into mainstream schools where appropriate.

The school is committed to providing a progressive, stimulating and safe environment, with sound management practices, good communication, appropriate curriculum delivery, parental involvement and community awareness.

Selection Criteria – Graduates
* SC1 Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the capacity to incorporate the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills; demonstrated capacity to respond to student learning needs.
* SC2 Demonstrated capacity to implement high impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluate the impact of learning and teaching programs on student learning growth.
* SC3 Demonstrated capacity to monitor and assess student learning; demonstrated capacity to use data to inform teaching practice and provide feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents.
* SC4 Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated capacity to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader school community to support student learning, wellbeing and engagement.
* SC5 Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values; demonstrated capacity to reflect upon practice and engage in professional learning to continually improve the quality of teaching.
Program Perks – Graduates

This position attracts an incentive payment of $5,650 (pre‐tax) for the successful candidate who meets the eligibility criteria set out under conditions of employment.

Role – Graduates

The primary focus of the range 1 classroom teacher is on further developing skills and competencies to become an effective classroom practitioner with structured support and guidance from teachers at higher levels. Teachers plan, prepare and deliver programs to achieve specific student outcomes. Range 1 teachers work under general direction within clear guidelines, follow established work practices and documented priorities, and may have responsibility for the supervision and training of one or more student teachers.

At this level new entrants to the profession receive structured support, mentoring and guidance. They plan and teach student groups in one or more subjects and participate in induction programs and professional learning activities that integrate curriculum, assessment and pedagogy across the school. Teachers also assist in policy development, project teams and the organisation of co‐curricula activities.

Responsibilities – Graduates
* Planning and implementing a range of teaching programs or courses of study.
* Teaching an area of the curriculum or a general curriculum to a year level.
* Monitoring, evaluating and reporting student progress in key learning areas.
* Implementing strategies to achieve targets related to student learning outcomes.
* Maintaining records of class attendance and recording student progress.
* Implementing effective student management consistent with the school charter.
* Working with a mentor to participate in professional development planning, implementation and reflection, developing a professional portfolio.
* Supervising a range of student activities including support and welfare programs.
* Contributing to a range of co‐curricular programs.
Who May Apply – Graduates
* Have completed their course requirements and graduated within the last four years.
* Not be employed as a teacher by the Department at the time the advertised position is to commence.
* Be currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Qualification Requirements
* Provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
* If completed an Australian postgraduate level initial teaching program or course of study on or after 1 January 2024, demonstrate satisfactory completion of a postgraduate level accredited initial teacher education program.
* If graduated from a Victorian ITE program after 1 July 2016, demonstrate that you have passed the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) requirements.
Eligibility for Incentive Payments
* Commit to a minimum of one year employment at this school.
* Not be a Graduate Teacher Incentive recipient from a previous vacancy.
* Not be employed as a teacher by the Department at the time the advertised position is to commence.
