Primary objective
As part of the school leadership team, be responsible for guiding the teaching staff and community to develop and implement the
Bilingual/Biliteracy Program in accordance with NT Curriculum and policies, school-based curriculum and school policy.
Context statement
Yirrkala School is located in East Arnhem Land in the community of Yirrkala. The school caters for students from Preschool to Year 12 and
supports further education and vocational training for adults. The school also has a Families as First Teachers program. Yirrkala School
uses a bilingual/biliteracy learning approach, teaching in and through the Yolngu language of Dhuwaya, other Yolngu clan languages and
English.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide advice and support for staff in all areas of the Bilingual Program. This includes collaborating with other areas of the school to
develop and lead planning for the whole school Bilingual Program and Garma curriculum.
2. Support the delivery of the school's bilingual program in classrooms by working closely with the Regional Language Officer, staff,
community, and relevant departmental support officers to supervise the production and delivery of curriculum materials and program
implementation guidelines.
1. Collaborate with senior staff to provide professional development for all teaching staff in the implementation of the Bilingual Program.
2. In conjunction with the co-Principals and regional staff, develop baseline data and school targets for reporting against improvements
in Indigenous Language and EAL/D outcomes to the school community and the system.
5. Supervise the work and professional development of the Literacy Workers.
6. In collaboration with the Literature Production Supervisor, coordinate and contribute to the production and archiving of appropriate
materials to resource the school's Bilingual Program and Garma curriculum.
7. Be responsible, in collaboration with senior staff, for the evaluation of the Bilingual Program and the preparation and presentation of
evaluation documentation.
8. Learn to speak the Indigenous language used in the Bilingual Program if it is not a language spoken by the incumbent.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant teaching qualification.
2. Proven experience working in a multi-cultural environment with demonstrated knowledge of language acquisition and language
teaching methodology.
3. Proven ability to work effectively with Indigenous language advisors to develop language for the teaching and learning context across
the stages of schooling.
1. Proven ability to plan and deliver quality education programs and mentor cross-cultural teams to plan and deliver appropriate lessons.
2. Demonstrated experience in monitoring and analysing student achievement data to assist teachers and Aboriginal educators to identify
targets for future student learning.
1. Demonstrated ability of effective and flexible communication skills and proven ability to communicate effectively in a wide range of
educational or community environments
Desirable
Post graduate qualifications in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), EAL/D and or applied linguistics.
