Job Overview
The Shire of Esperance, located 750 km from Perth on Western Australia's south‐east coast, employs over 300 people. The Environmental Services team offers an opportunity for a Senior Environmental Officer or Environmental Officer to provide expert environmental advice and support the Shire's operations and asset management.
Responsibilities
* Develop, implement and monitor environmental management plans, programmes and strategies.
* Provide specialist technical advice to internal staff, community groups and residents on environmental matters.
* Conduct environmental field surveys, flora surveys, water‐quality monitoring and related work.
* Prepare reports for State and Commonwealth Government approvals and annual environmental licences.
* Provide technical input and develop environmental policies, procedures and guidelines for the Shire.
* Deliver environmental programmes relating to the Shire's parks, reserves and natural areas.
* Attend meetings on behalf of the Shire with community groups, government instrumentalities and other departments.
* Prepare written reports for Council, committees, project briefs and funding applications.
* Coordinate field personnel and contractors to ensure works are completed to required standards.
* Plan and deliver surveys and monitoring programmes using desktop and on‐ground surveys, including drone‐based aerial imagery and multispectral data.
* Review and monitor funding opportunities and prepare funding applications for projects.
* Develop special environmental projects.
* Prepare estimates for projects and monitor budget allocations and expenditure.
* Recommend items for consideration in budget preparation.
* Perform any other duties as required.
Qualifications
* Tertiary level qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
* Demonstrated professional experience in environmental management.
* Solid knowledge of principles of environmental protection and reserve management, including the development of weed‐management and revegetation programmes.
* Proficiency in local, state and national policies and legislation on environmental protection and their practical application.
* Strong research, statistical analysis, negotiation, problem‐solving, report‐writing and time‐management skills.
* Experience in grant‐funding applications for environmental projects.
* Knowledge of statutory environmental matters and experience in preparing, implementing and monitoring environmental plans.
* Knowledge of local flora and ability to conduct flora surveys.
* Experience with community consultation and engagement practices.
* Computer skills and experience using GIS software.
* Willingness and ability to conduct fieldwork and lead teams for water sampling, flora surveys, revegetation and other reserve‐management work.
Salary & Benefits
Salary: $76,351 to $87,885 per annum.
* 5 weeks annual leave per year.
* Option of one Rostered Day Off (RDO) every 4 weeks in exchange for working 40 hours per week.
