Overview
The Research Physicist will play a critical role in advancing Avion’s radiopharmaceutical and imaging-enabled clinical trial programs. This position is responsible for applying advanced physics expertise to support study design, imaging protocol development, radiation dosimetry, scanner qualification, and data analysis in clinical trials. A key aspect of the role is the authorship and maintenance of imaging-related SOPs, hands-on organ contouring and dosimetry analysis, and input into clinical trial protocols and design. The role involves collaboration with sponsors and investigators to ensure Avion’s imaging science supports successful study outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Review and provide expert input into clinical trial protocols, focusing on imaging methodology, dosimetry strategy, and trial design considerations.
- Develop, validate, and optimise imaging acquisition and reconstruction protocols for clinical trials.
- Conduct organ contouring, segmentation, and dosimetry analysis for trial participants, ensuring robust and reproducible absorbed dose calculations.
- Contribute to imaging charters, scientific sections of regulatory submissions, and study start-up documents.
- Provide scientific input on imaging endpoints and trial methodology, ensuring alignment with ICH GCP, IAEA, and ICRP guidelines.
- Lead the development, authorship, and periodic update of SOPs for imaging research and imaging core lab operations.
- Oversee scanner and phantom qualification processes across trial sites.
- Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), radiation safety regulations, and trial-specific requirements.
- Support quality management activities, including QC checklists and audit readiness.
- Collaborate with sponsor R&D; teams on innovative theranostic and imaging technologies.
- Attend and contribute to sponsor meetings, scientific boards, and study design workshops, representing Avion’s imaging expertise.
- Explore and validate new quantitative imaging biomarkers for use in clinical trials.
- Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, conference abstracts, and scientific communications.
- Act as a subject matter expert to clinical operations, data management, and safety teams; provide training to CRO staff, investigators, and site personnel on imaging physics, dosimetry, and SOP adherence.
- Support cross-functional teams in integrating imaging science into study planning and execution.
Qualifications & Experience
- PhD or Master’s degree in Medical Physics, Radiation Physics, Nuclear Medicine Physics, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in medical physics within a clinical or research environment (oncology, radiopharmaceuticals, or nuclear medicine preferred).
- Demonstrated expertise in quantitative imaging (PET/CT, SPECT/CT, MRI) and radiation dosimetry.
- Hands-on experience in organ contouring and segmentation for dosimetry in clinical trials.
- Familiarity with imaging software (e.g., MIM, SurePlan, PMOD) for dosimetry and image analysis.
- Strong knowledge of radiation safety standards and regulatory frameworks (IAEA, ARPANSA, ICRP, ICH GCP).
- Proven experience in writing and maintaining SOPs for imaging research or clinical operations.
- Experience in protocol review and contribution to clinical trial design.
- Experience working within a CRO, imaging core lab, or clinical trial setting.
- Familiarity with AI/ML approaches for imaging biomarker development.
- Publication record in imaging or radiopharmaceutical research.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; attention to detail with commitment to data integrity and quality; ability to manage multiple projects under tight timelines; collaborative mindset with ability to influence and train non-physicist colleagues; innovative thinker passionate about advancing theranostics and imaging science.
