The Role

We are seeking a highly capable Senior Legal Counsel to join our team in Hobart, providing expert legal advice across a broad range of commercial, regulatory and operational matters.

This is a fixed-term, 12 month position based in Hobart.

Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, you will act as a trusted advisor to the business, delivering strategic and pragmatic legal guidance to support TasPorts’ objectives.

This is a diverse, hands‑on role where you will:

* Provide timely, high-quality legal advice across commercial, corporate and regulatory matters
* Draft, review and negotiate complex contracts and agreements
* Support major projects, procurement activities and infrastructure initiatives
* Advise on governance, risk management and compliance matters
* Manage disputes and engage with external counsel where required
* Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the business


About You

You are a commercially astute legal professional with strong technical expertise and a collaborative approach.

You will bring:

* Significant post-qualification experience (ideally 7+ years) in-house and/or in private practice
* Strong experience in commercial contracting, corporate law and/or infrastructure, energy, or government sectors
* Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
* The ability to balance legal risk with business objectives
* A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset


Essential requirements

* Relevant tertiary qualification in Law
* Eligibility to hold a Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of Tasmania
* Current Driver’s Licence
* Ability to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)


Desirable

* 7+ years’ post‑qualification experience as a legal practitioner in a commercial environment (in house or private practice)
* Good working knowledge of governance, risk and compliance frameworks
* Demonstrated experience advising on construction and infrastructure projects, commercial property developments and IT software procurements
* Highly developed negotiation and conflict‑resolution skills
