Insurance - Senior Legal Counsel - 6 + PQE Sydney
Base pay range: $200,000.00/yr - $250,000.00/yr
Position Overview
We have exclusively partnered with a specialist insurer who has a strong presence across infrastructure, surety, aviation, property, and niche financial risk products. They are entering an exciting phase of expansion, integration and capability building across APACA and because of this growth are looking to welcome a Senior Legal Counsel to their established legal team.
The Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for navigating the evolving regulatory landscape, supporting product growth, and ensuring effective integration into group frameworks. Reporting directly into the Head of Legal, this position will suit a commercially minded insurance or financial services lawyer who enjoys a broad advisory role and exposure to senior decision‐making.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide legal advice across the full range of business lines, including surety, aviation, infrastructure, property and transactional risk products
* Support underwriting teams with policy wording, product development, coverage issues and transaction structuring
* Advise on claims strategies, dispute management and engagement with external counsel
* Assist with corporate governance, board materials, company secretarial matters and regulatory reporting
* Lead or support legal workstreams connected to the Cert Group acquisition and integration (policies, frameworks, compliance alignment, delegation structures and group approvals)
* Ensure compliance with APRA, ASIC and other regulatory obligations, including oversight of licensing and distribution requirements
* Draft and negotiate commercial contracts, reinsurance agreements, technology and procurement arrangements
* Provide legal input into strategic initiatives, new product launches and market expansion opportunities
* Contribute to continuous improvement in risk, compliance and legal processes.
About You
* 6–12 years' PQE, ideally from an insurance business, financial services organisation, or a top/mid‐tier firm with corporate insurance/regulatory experience
* Strong understanding of general insurance operations, distribution structures, product lifecycle and claims considerations
* Familiarity with APRA, ASIC and the broader financial services regulatory regime (including AFS licensing, breach reporting and distribution obligations)
* Excellent drafting skills and sound commercial judgment
* Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and influence stakeholders at all levels
* Collaborative mindset, with an interest in helping to build robust legal and governance capabilities within a growing group
