Library Technician – Experience

Avondale University is seeking applications for a full-time (38 hrs per week) or part-time (35 hrs per week) Library Technician – Experience position to join the library team on the Lake Macquarie campus for an early January 2026 commencement. This role will work primarily at the Lake Macquarie Campus Library (Cooranbong, NSW) with a regular shift at the Sydney Campus Library (Wahroonga, NSW).

Be part of the transformation. This important role is responsible for coordinating and supporting the delivery of frontline library services and engagement activities that enhance the student experience and ensure access to information and resources. The position coordinates interlibrary loans and document delivery, manages and processes serial publications, supervises Library Student Workers, and contributes to library communications and engagement activities.

What will you do?

- Coordinate Frontline User and Customer Services: Coordinate the delivery of consistent, high-quality user services at the Lake Macquarie Library, including loans, returns, user accounts, and customer support functions, to meet the learning, teaching, and research needs of the University, under the direction of the Experience & Engagement Librarian.
- Manage Resource Access and Sharing Services: Coordinate interlibrary loans, document delivery, and student resource requests to ensure equitable and efficient access to information across campuses and online.
- Manage and Process Serials: Manage the acquisition, maintenance, cataloguing, and end-processing of serial publications in both print and electronic formats, contributing to effective and timely collection development and management.
- Coordinate Library Communications and Engagement: Design and deliver library communications and promotional activities, including print and digital content, signage, displays, and engagement campaigns.
- Maintain Reserve and Equipment Collections: Assist in the development, maintenance, and optimisation of Reserve and equipment collections at the Lake Macquarie Library, in consultation with key stakeholders, to maximise access and engagement.
- Deliver Student Consultations: Provide one-on-one appointments and consultations for students, offering support in referencing, information literacy, and library research skills to enhance academic success and confidence in using library resources.
- Support Academic Liaison Activities for Assigned Disciplines: Review unit outlines and unit proposals for assigned academic disciplines, ensuring alignment with library resource capabilities and learning support frameworks. Develop and maintain Subject LibGuides and discipline‑specific resources in consultation with School Liaison Librarians. Contribute to the creation of digital learning objects (DLOs) that support student academic success and enhance resource discoverability.
- Deliver High‑Quality Frontline Support: Participate in rostered desk duties and user support services across circulation, reference, and research support, ensuring a responsive and professional experience for all users.

About You

To be successful in the Library Technician role, you will be a highly motivated individual with great interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Criteria

- Relevant qualifications and/or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training.
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills that enable effective engagement, collaboration and partnership building with internal and external stakeholders in both face‑to‑face and online environments.
- High level of organisational and administrative skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment.
- A strong service ethic and customer service experience with an ability to respond professionally and sensitively to a diverse range of service needs and to manage demands at peak periods with a good knowledge of library services, products, and collections.
- Demonstrated ability to use a range of information technology and software packages related to physical and digital collections, general business administration, and customer‑facing creative/information technologies, with particular emphasis on circulation procedures.
- Knowledge of, or interest in, best practice and current trends in front‑line library service delivery in an academic environment.
- Experience in, or ability to develop skills in, providing information and reference consultations and advice, preferably in an academic library.
- Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and a working knowledge of equity and WHS principles in the workplace.

Desirable Criteria

- Eligibility for Associate or Technician membership of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) or progress towards this qualification.
- Experience in an academic library environment or similar.
- Current Driver Licence Class C.

Salary: Avondale Higher Education Worker Level 4 $73,619 – $77,340 per annum, plus superannuation.
