A newly established postdoctoral research fellow position in the Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer program at James Cook University.

Position Details

* Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Vanadium ore hyperspectral characterisation
* Full‐time and fixed term for two years
* Located at the Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas, in North Queensland
* Academic Level A $80,371 – $107,395 per annum + up to 17% employer superannuation contributions.

What you can accomplish in the role

This position involves close collaboration with Critical Minerals Queensland and external industry stakeholders. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will undertake research focused on hyperspectral characterisation of a) vanadium from various horizons of the Toolebuc Formation and b) various tailings samples to inform decisions regarding characterisation techniques, ore extraction, tailings handling, and environmental management.

Working in collaboration with researchers from Earth and Physical Sciences, Engineering, and industry collaborators/partners, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will conduct research, develop and/or contribute to research publications as a member of a high‐performing team and ensure all key research outcomes and milestones are achieved in alignment with project timelines.

Responsibilities

* Undertake research on hyperspectral characterisation of vanadium ore and tailings samples.
* Develop and refine analytical techniques using EPMA, SEM, LA‐ICPMS, XRD, FTIR, VNIR, MIR, SWIR, and other advanced instruments.
* Collaborate with critical minerals stakeholders to inform extraction and environmental management decisions.
* Prepare and submit research findings for publication and contribute to the growth of the research culture within the College of Science and Engineering and the Economic Geology Research Centre.

Qualifications, skills and experience required

* A PhD qualification or equivalent in Geology, Physics or related disciplines.
* Demonstrated experience in mineralogy, sedimentary geology, and/or geochemistry.
* Experience in geological materials characterisation using hyperspectral methods and advanced instrumental methods such as EPMA, SEM, LA‐ICPMS, XRD, etc.
* A proven track record in research publication.

Desirable skills and experience

* Capacity to work as part of a team and contribute to team efforts.
* Experience in collaboration, engagement with, and reporting to external agencies, e.g. government and/or industry.
* Experience with clay and fine‐grained geological material characterisation using FTIR, VNIR, MIR, SWIR.
