About the Role
Our client is a beloved artisan bakery renowned for its commitment to traditional baking techniques and high‐quality, handcrafted products. With a passion for creating delicious, wholesome breads, pastries, and desserts, they take pride in using time‐honoured methods and premium ingredients to deliver exceptional baked goods to their community. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Cook to join their passionate kitchen team. In this role, you will move beyond basic assistance to take ownership of key cooking, baking, and production tasks. You will prepare, cook, and finish a variety of bakery items while maintaining the highest standards of quality, consistency, and food safety. The ideal candidate will have proven experience, a strong work ethic, and a genuine passion for artisan food production.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
* Food Preparation & Cooking:
o Prepare, measure, weigh, and combine ingredients for breads, pastries, and other bakery items according to exact specifications and recipes.
o Execute cooking and baking tasks including chopping, mixing, shaping doughs, and operating ovens and proofers.
o Monitor fermentation, proofing, and baking processes to ensure optimal texture, flavour, and appearance.
o Adjust cooking methods and times as needed to maintain product quality.
* Quality & Service Delivery:
o Maintain consistent quality by strictly following established recipes and procedures, with the ability to identify and correct deviations.
o Conduct taste‐testing and ensure all finished products meet the bakery's high standards before service or packaging.
o Oversee the packaging, labelling, and presentation of finished products, ensuring they are ready for display or dispatch.
* Equipment & Workspace Maintenance:
o Conduct thorough cleaning and sanitising of kitchen equipment, work areas, utensils, and baking trays to comply with health and safety regulations.
o Safely operate and perform basic maintenance on kitchen machinery and tools (e.g., mixers, ovens, dough sheeters).
o Ensure proper storage of ingredients and strict adherence to stock rotation (FIFO) procedures.
Skills & Requirements
* Qualification: Relevant qualification in Commercial Cookery (Certificate III or above) is required.
* Experience: Proven 2 years' full‐time experience as a Cook (or Commis Cook/Demi‐Chef) in a commercial kitchen. Bakery or pastry experience is highly advantageous.
* Strong understanding of food preparation techniques, cooking methods, and kitchen operations in a high‐volume setting.
* Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and public holidays as required in a bakery environment.
* Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing consistent, high‐quality food.
* Strong understanding of food safety standards (HACCP) and hygiene best practices.
* Physical stamina to stand for long periods and work in a fast‐paced, warm environment.
