The opportunityWe are recruiting for an Executive Level 2 (EL2) Director, Safeguards Regulation and Strategy. You will contribute to ensuring ASNO remains a credible, independent and robust regulator and effectively executes its role as the National Authority for Australia’s non-proliferation treaty obligations. You will operate at an organisation-wide level, strengthening how ASNO sets strategic direction, oversees and manages regulatory risk, coordinates the delivery of regulatory services, and supports sound decision-making. You will drive ASNO’s continued effectiveness as Australia’s national authority for nuclear and chemical non-proliferation treaties and as the independent domestic regulator responsible for implementing those obligations, in a complex and evolving international and domestic environment.
Working with ASNO’s Director-General and senior leadership team, you will strengthen ASNO’s strategic planning,
regulatory governance and regulatory management policy frameworks, including ensuring alignment with the
Government’s Regulatory Reform agenda. Working closely with ASNO’s scientific and technical teams, you will
support effective, risk-based regulatory delivery, including permit holder identification and compliance, inspection and
reporting functions, and contribute to building ASNO’s long-term capability, partnerships and regulatory stewardship.
You will have a combination of the following capabilities:
- Regulatory policy, risk and performance measurement expertise, informed by engagement with domestic and
international regulators and central agencies to strengthen governance and regulatory outcomes.
- Regulatory governance, management and capability development, including engagement with other
regulators and stewardship of regulatory systems, data and emerging regulatory technologies to support
effective, evidence-based regulation.
- Strategic and corporate planning, communications and engagement, including regional engagement,
workforce-related engagement and key stakeholder relationships that support ASNO’s long-term capability
and strategic direction.
- Governance and coordination capability, including prioritisation and provision of high-quality support to the
Director General to enable effective decision-making, oversight and delivery across ASNO’s functions.
You will be able to:
- Set direction and provide authoritative advice to senior leaders and other key stakeholders
- Coordinate inputs across regulatory strategy and policy, regulatory operational and corporate areas
- Make judgements in environments involving risk, sensitivity and public scrutiny
- Balance planned work (such as strategy cycles, regulatory programs and governance obligations) with
emerging priorities (such as ministerial requests, events or stakeholder issues)
The work typically involves:
- A mix of independent work and sustained collaboration
- Short turn-around tasks alongside longer-term initiatives
- Engagement with internal teams, regulated entities, government partners and international counterparts
ASNO operates in an open-plan environment with access to quiet spaces. Some roles require regular in-office
presence due to operational, security or coordination needs. Flexible working arrangements may be available subject
to role requirements
