RMIT University is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for a fully funded, industry‐linked research project within the Department of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Mechatronic Engineering. Supported by an Australian Government RTP Scholarship with an additional AUD $10,000 annual DSTG top‐up, this project focuses on developing advanced multifunctional aerospace coatings for demanding operational environments.
Role Description
This full‐time PhD position will focus on next‐generation UV‐resilient aerospace coatings, with an emphasis on lightweight, high‐performance polymer‐based material systems designed to improve durability, environmental resistance, and thermal management. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary research environment and collaborate closely with industry partners on experimentally driven research with practical aerospace applications.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct experimental research in advanced coatings and multifunctional material systems
* Develop and characterise polymer‐based and functional coating materials
* Perform material characterisation, data analysis, and interpretation of structure–property relationships
* Contribute to the preparation of journal publications, technical reports, and conference presentations
* Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary research teams and industry stakeholders
* Support the advancement of sustainable and high‐performance aerospace technologies
Qualifications
* A strong academic background in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Surface Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or a closely related discipline
* Strong experimental, analytical, and problem‐solving skills
* Experience with material characterisation and laboratory‐based research
* Strong report writing and scientific communication skills
* Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce high‐quality research outputs
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
* Strong organisational and project management skills
* Interest in coatings, multifunctional materials, aerospace applications, or advanced polymer systems
* Prior research or industry experience in coatings, polymers, composites, or aerospace‐related applications
* Experience contributing to scientific publications or conference presentations
* Australian citizens only
* Applicants must satisfy RMIT University's PhD admission requirements
* A Master's or an honours degree or equivalent research experience in a relevant field is preferred
* Additional DSTG top‐up scholarship of AUD $10,000 per annum
