Community Companion – Safe Space Volunteer
Busselton Community Safe Space – Busselton WA
BCSS is a welcoming, non-clinical support space where people experiencing emotional distress or mental health challenges can connect with compassionate volunteers who listen without judgment. Our mission is to provide a safe and understanding environment that fosters hope, connection, and community support. We are looking for empathetic, caring individuals with strong listening skills who are passionate about supporting others. Lived experience with mental health challenges or suicide (personal, bereaved or as a support person) is a requirement.
We kindly ask volunteers for one 4 hour shift per month, when you have the capacity, as ensuring your own mental health is of utmost importance. If you would like to do more than that, you are welcome to do so. We are located at 226 Bussell Hwy, behind LAMP Inc., from 5-9pm on Friday evenings. If your time commitments are outside those hours please get in touch so we can discuss other ways to be involved and future opportunities for extended shift operating hours.
Tasks for the shift include set-up and pack-down of the space, making cups of tea, sitting, listening, playing games, undertaking mindfulness and/or craft activities; whatever it is the guest would like to do. We are led by their needs and choices.
Training will be provided after you have completed three or more 'shadow shifts' in which you can get a feel for the space and ensure you feel comfortable, ask questions and immerse yourself in the experience. This is a time to consider if now is the right time for you to be involved, considering your own mental health journey.
To begin 'shadow shifts', we will first require a valid Working With Children's Check and National Police Clearance, both of which we will assist you to obtain.
