Job Description
The position of Trades Assistant requires a highly skilled and experienced individual to support the operation of mechanical systems, hydraulics, open gearing, gearboxes, diesel generators, and hoists.
* Lubrication, oil and grease sampling, and service inspections will be performed as part of routine maintenance tasks.
* Accurate maintenance logs, marked-up engineering drawings, and updated documentation are essential for effective system management.
* Assistance with maintaining stores, workshop, and laboratories is also required.
Additionally, you will assist in identifying and implementing preventive maintenance routines and safe work procedures. Site activities such as telescope equipment changes, stores support, general site support, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of observatory systems, and occasional travel to other sites may be required.
As an HSE specialist, you will promote workplace safety by adhering to policies and procedures, conduct safety checks on equipment and workspaces, and assist in incident reporting and investigation processes.
Maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, safety inspections, and compliance logs is crucial.
* Previous experience in mechanical or industrial settings, especially in support roles with specialisation at HSE coordinator, is highly valued.
* Demonstrated understanding of WHS regulations and safe work practices is essential.
* Strong awareness of safety protocols and environmental standards is also crucial.

Required Skills and Qualifications
* Industrial experience as a trade assistant that contributed to the maintenance and operation of one or more of the following: mechanical systems, hydraulics, open gearing, gearboxes, diesel generators, and hoists.
* Fault finding and diagnosis of issues, including interpretation of documentation and drawings where needed.
* High level of interpersonal skills, including being respectful and collaborative, building trust, listening, and using discussions to find common ground.
Computer software packages for general correspondence and documentation updates will also be utilised.
Experience in either mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, or welding and fabrication trades is highly beneficial.
Working at Heights certificate and Heights Rescue Training certificate are also necessary.
