Overview

You are passionate about modernising the Human Resources function through strategic and secure management of cloud data products, pipelines and databases. We are undergoing one of Australia's largest digital transformations and establishing an Engineering function within Human Resources. Together we bring an engineering culture and passion for DevSecOps and GitOps within the cloud.

Responsibilities
* As a Data Engineer and database specialist you will be designing, creating and managing the cloud databases and data pipelines that underpin our decoupled cloud architecture and API first approach.
* You will take ownership and accountability of functional and non-functional design and work within a team of Engineers to create innovative solutions that unlock value and modernise technology designs.
* You will role model continuous improvement mindset in the team, and in your project interactions, by taking technical ownership of key assets, including roadmaps and technical direction of data services running on our AWS environments.
Team and Collaboration

You will work with AWS Cloud Infrastructure Engineers, Software/API Developers and Architects to design, develop, deploy and operate data services and solutions that underpin a cloud ecosystem.

Team Context

The HR Data Engineering centre of excellence works in an Agile methodology with our Human Resources business to plan, prioritise and deliver data products needed to support our business. You will be part of the People Analytics team, working on Gen AI and ML use cases and building data assets to support technology and AI goals. You will use deep understanding of data modelling and data quality and extensive SQL experience to access relational databases (e.g., MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL), identify, transform and validate data for advanced analytics, machine learning and generative AI requirements. You will design and build reliable, efficient data pipelines using modern cloud services on AWS (e.g., S3, Lambda, Redshift, Glue) to process large data volumes.

Qualifications and Skills
* Experience designing and implementing databases for data integration in the enterprise
* Ability to performance-tune databases from code and design perspectives
* Experience automating data ingestion and transformation processes using scheduling tools
* Experience monitoring and troubleshooting data pipelines for reliability and performance
* Experience addressing performance and scaling through horizontal scaling or database tuning
* Ability to design application logical database requirements
* Ability to collaborate with business and technical teams to design and build critical databases and data pipelines
* Ability to advise business owners on strategic database direction and application solution design
* Strong SQL skills for writing, optimizing, and debugging queries
* Knowledge of database design, indexing, and normalization principles
* Understanding of data formats (JSON, CSV, XML) and data validation, cleaning and transformation
* Proficiency in automation/scripting for scheduling and monitoring data processes (e.g., bash, cron)
* Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
* Snowflake experience is advantageous
* Experience with Workday or payroll data integrations is highly regarded
Tech Skills
* AWS data products such as AWS Glue and AWS EMR
* Oracle and AWS Aurora RDS (PostgreSQL)
* AWS S3 ingestion, transformation and writing to databases
* Proficiency in Python, Scala or Java for data ingestion and transformation scripts
* Experience with data-centric frameworks such as Spark (Scala or Python)
* Strong SQL knowledge for querying, optimization and debugging
* Familiarity with database design, indexing, and normalization
* Understanding of data formats and data validation/cleaning/transformation
* Automation tooling and scripting for scheduling and monitoring data processes
* Version control experience (Git)
* Snowflake experience is advantageous
* Experience with Workday or payroll systems as data sources is highly regarded
