The Ranger Coordinator will assist in the establishment and the delivery of the Nimanburr ranger programs by providing strong leadership to a team of Indigenous rangers to deliver on their annual works plan as guided by Nimanburr traditional owners. The works plan includes a diverse range of cultural and natural resource management activities such as fire management, threatened and pest species management, on country trips with senior traditional owners, and engagement with other government and non-government agencies.
The position operates on Nimanburr Country, Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia, with regular travel to Broome and across the Kimberley. Broome based applicants are encouraged to apply with relocation to Nimanburr to be completed upon acquisition of suitable accommodation and Ranger base.
DUTIES
* Establish and conduct recruitment of a casual/part‐time pool of Nimanburr Rangers with support from KLC and Nimanburr HCAC.
* Plan the implementation of the developing Nimanburr Ranger Program including approved workplans, Ranger Base workplace arrangements, transport and travel.
* Supervise and coordinate day‐to‐day activities of the Nimanburr Rangers to ensure delivery of the annual work plan.
* Work closely with the LSMU, Program Manager, the Nimanburr HCAC, and other KLC staff to develop, monitor, and report on ranger activities.
* Ensure effective day‐to‐day administrative management of the Ranger program, including timesheets, purchasing, casual ranger and Traditional Owner payments.
* Plan, supervise and participate in field activities to remote on‐country locations, including extended periods in the field.
* Work with Coordinators and external organisations to develop partnerships and land and sea management projects and ensure appropriate governance, ownership and participation by Traditional Owners.
* Mentor Rangers to develop personal, workplace and project management skills, leadership abilities and strong collaboration with the Land and Sea Management Unit support team.
* Support on‐job training and liaise with the Ranger Training Coordinator and training organisations to enable appropriate professional learning outcomes for rangers.
* Assist researchers to engage in approved on‐country research with Rangers and other Traditional Owners, and direct research requests through appropriate channels.
* Ensure rangers maintain and safeguard equipment and resources and are ultimately responsible for the group's assets.
* Ensure compliance with cultural protocols and KLC policy and procedures, promote safe working practices and instruct Rangers in OH&S policy and procedures.
* Participate and assist in KLC and Nimanburr events as required, including Land and Sea Management Unit meetings, Native Title meetings, regional forums and the KLC AGM.
* Investigate fee‐for‐service opportunities and other projects that support the development and sustainability of the ranger group and Traditional Owner aspirations.
* Other tasks as directed by authorised KLC personnel or representatives.
SELECTION CRITERIA
* Experience working with Indigenous land managers, rangers, Indigenous Protected Areas or Joint Management.
* Managing small teams and coordinating on‐ground natural and cultural resource management projects, preferably with Indigenous organisations in remote regions.
* Experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities, understanding and knowledge of social/cultural challenges in Northern Australia, community empowerment, training and development.
* Experience working independently with minimal supervision in a remote area, demonstrating capacity to remain focused, positive, and organized in a challenging work environment.
* Good communication, negotiation and community consultation skills including ability to work with an advisory group and as a member of a team.
* Experience in project management, including budgeting, planning, supporting grant writing, reporting, and acquittals.
* High proficiency in administration, reporting, computing and Microsoft Office Suite.
* Current valid driver's licence and experience operating vehicles and/or heavy‐duty machinery in remote off‐road conditions.
* Must be physically fit and able to coordinate and support on country camping activities in the Nimanburr Country context for trips of up to a week at a time.
* Applicants must possess a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) and National Police Check when required (or ability to obtain one).
* Tertiary qualification and/or relevant experience in environmental, ecology, conservation science, anthropology, social science/community development or other related field or country and cultural experience determined as equivalent.
* Technical or trade skills relevant to the ranger program (e.g. construction, fire and weed management, GIS, cultural mapping, plant and animal identification, nursery/horticulture operations).
* Experience working with community development in a cross‐cultural setting.
* Experience working on small vessels.
