Legal counsel

Sydney
Smartways Logistics
Compliance Director
Posted: 27 November
Offer description

* Open to both full-time and part-time applicants

Step into your first in-house role with impact.

At Smartways, we're scaling fast and transforming how healthcare logistics works across Australia and New Zealand. As our first in-house Legal Counsel, you'll have a rare opportunity to shape the legal function of a high-growth business that's redefining time-critical healthcare delivery.

If you've built a strong foundation in commercial law —perhaps in private practice or as a paralegal transitioning into a lawyer role—and you're ready to broaden your scope in a fast-moving commercial environment, this is your chance to make your mark.

You'll work closely with our Executive Team on diverse and meaningful projects—from contracts and compliance to governance and M&A—where your advice directly contributes to real outcomes that improve healthcare access and impact lives.

We're proud to be the first 100% carbon-neutral healthcare logistics company in Australasia, measuring success by both our performance and our impact. Our team is united by a shared purpose: making a difference, one shipment at a time.

Purpose of the Role

The Legal Counsel will provide day-to-day legal support across commercial, corporate, employment, and governance matters. This is a hands-on, growth-oriented role ideal for someone who wants to step out of a traditional law firm environment and gain broad exposure inside a fast-scaling business.

Key Responsibilities

· Draft, review, and negotiate a range of commercial contracts and property leases

· Support governance, compliance, and corporate administration requirements

· Provide practical advice to business leaders on legal risk and regulatory matters

· Partner with external counsel where specialist advice is needed

· Support M&A and integration activities as opportunities arise

· Develop scalable templates, policies, and legal frameworks to enable growth

About You

· 4–7 years PQE (or equivalent experience) in commercial, corporate, or employment law

· Strong drafting and stakeholder communication skills

· Confident working autonomously and translating legal concepts into commercial outcomes

· Excited by variety, learning, and working directly with senior leaders

· Looking for a genuine opportunity to grow and shape your first in-house legal role

What you will get in return

· Birthday Leave – take your special day off, on us

· On-site Gym – stay healthy without the commute

· Free Snacks – fuel your brain with quality treats

· Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – confidential and free, because your wellbeing matters

· Direct Access to the CEO & Executive Team – gain exposure, experience, and influence
