Located within one of Victoria's most distinctive regional municipalities, Macedon Ranges Shire is known for its natural beauty, thriving communities and strong regional identity. Positioned within reach of metropolitan Melbourne while retaining its unique character, the region continues to attract residents, businesses and visitors seeking an exceptional quality of life. Council plays a critical role in balancing growth, environmental stewardship and community wellbeing while delivering services that support a resilient and sustainable future.
This is a key senior management opportunity within the Corporate Directorate, responsible for leading Council's Governance and Performance department. The role provides a central enabling function across the organisation, ensuring governance systems are robust, compliant and effective while strengthening how Council measures, monitors and improves organisational performance.
Reporting to the Director Corporate, you will lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for governance services, information management, performance reporting and assurance activities. This includes oversight of Council meetings and delegated committees, as well as trusted advice to the Executive Leadership Team and Councillors on governance matters.
A core focus will be the development and continuous improvement of governance and performance frameworks across Council. This includes corporate reporting, annual reporting, quarterly performance reporting, service reviews and internal audit coordination. The role also supports the effective implementation of Council strategies, plans and policies in line with organisational priorities.
You will hold accountability for ensuring Council meets its legislative and compliance obligations under the Local Government Act 2020 and other relevant frameworks. This includes oversight of public records management in line with PROV standards, as well as privacy, information governance and compliance requirements.
The role also manages Council's response to complex and sensitive matters including complaints, external agency correspondence and regulatory engagement with bodies such as OVIC, the Victorian Ombudsman and IBAC, including Public Interest Disclosure matters.
This is a highly influential position requiring sound judgement, calm leadership and the ability to operate effectively in a politically sensitive environment. The successful candidate will bring experience in governance, compliance, risk or related disciplines within local government or the broader public sector. You will bring strong leadership capability, a practical approach to continuous improvement and the ability to build trusted relationships across Councillors, executives, staff and external stakeholders. Equally important will be your ability to lead change, strengthen organisational capability and contribute to a culture of accountability, transparency and performance.
This opportunity will suit a leader who values integrity, collaboration and service to community, and who is motivated by the opportunity to strengthen governance and performance outcomes in a respected regional council environment.
