The Role
Strong understanding of power system network design requirements, including the design and grid connection of battery energy storage systems (BESS), co-located BESS and Solar PV projects, hydrogen storage/electrolysis facilities, and onshore wind projects. The role works closely with teams across development, procurement, project management, engineering, and controls to deliver complex grid connection solutions. It also involves regular engagement with clients, consultants, equipment suppliers, and network operators to support successful project delivery and integration.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the AC electrical design scope for utility-scale BESS projects.
* Oversee the design and integration of HV/LV systems, substations, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and grid connection infrastructure.
* Coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering teams, consultants, and external stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
* Review and approve electrical design documentation including SLDs, schematics, layouts, cable studies, and technical specifications.
* Ensure compliance with Australian Standards, DNSP requirements, AEMO guidelines, and project technical specifications.
* Manage technical interfaces between BESS OEMs, inverter suppliers, grid operators, and EPC contractors.
* Support grid connection activities including power system studies, R1/R2 submissions, GPS compliance, and commissioning requirements.
* Identify and manage technical risks, constructability challenges, and design changes throughout project execution.
* Support procurement activities through technical evaluations, vendor reviews, and equipment selection.
* Participate in FATs, SATs, commissioning, energisation, and troubleshooting activities as required.
* Drive continuous improvement across engineering standards, processes, and technical governance.
Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
* Proven experience delivering AC electrical design for utility-scale renewable energy or BESS projects.
* Strong understanding of HV infrastructure, substations, protection systems, and grid connection requirements.
* Familiarity with Australian Standards, AEMO requirements, and DNSP compliance processes.
* Experience coordinating OEMs, consultants, EPC contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
* Strong knowledge of power system studies and grid compliance processes.
* Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
* Experience and knowledge of relevant software programmes such as DigSilent Power Factory, BIM360, Revit, AutoCAD 3D
