Reporting to the Engineering and Design Manager, the Substations Primary Engineer will be responsible for developing and delivering primary electrical engineering solutions from concept design through to detailed design for transmission network projects.

This role includes the preparation and development of concept and detailed primary systems engineering designs, as well as the elaboration of technical specifications and technical assessments of primary equipment, including switchgear, transformers, busbars, HV connections and associated primary plant.

The Substations Primary Engineer will also provide technical leadership, innovation, specialist advice, coaching and ongoing support throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, specifications and asset requirements, and contributing expert input to multidisciplinary project teams.

Responsibilities

* The Substations Primary Engineer is responsible for developing and delivering concept and detailed primary electrical engineering designs for transmission network substations. This includes defining substation configurations, equipment arrangements, switching philosophies and energisation sequences, in coordination with other engineering disciplines.
* The role involves preparing and reviewing technical specifications, drawings and documentation, and undertaking technical assessments of primary equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, busbars, instrument transformers and associated primary plant. The engineer will also support cost estimates and technical inputs during feasibility and tender phases.
* Responsibilities include defining technical requirements for project specifications and procurement packages, assessing tender submissions, and providing technical recommendations to clients and project teams.
* The Substations Primary Engineer provides technical support during construction and commissioning, including review of contractor proposals, resolution of site issues, coordination of interfaces and participation in FAT/SAT and commissioning activities.
* The role ensures all primary engineering activities comply with applicable standards, regulatory requirements, client asset standards, company policies and Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements.
* Effective communication and collaboration with internal teams, clients, contractors and equipment suppliers are essential, as is supporting project coordination, reporting, milestone deliverables and the successful delivery of projects within agreed quality, cost and schedule targets.

Skills

* The role requires proven and significant experience and technical expertise in a responsible position delivering primary electrical engineering design for transmission network substations and power system projects. A tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant professional experience is required.
* The position demands strong knowledge of safety legislation, standards and best practices applicable to engineering design, construction and commissioning of high-voltage substations, together with a demonstrated commitment to excellence and the efficient delivery of high-quality technical outcomes aligned with project and client requirements.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to support effective collaboration within high-performing, multidisciplinary teams. The role also requires strong analytical capability, with a focus on technical quality, attention to detail and critical thinking.
* The Primary Substations Engineer must be able to prepare clear and concise technical reports and documentation suitable for a broad range of stakeholders across multiple disciplines and levels of seniority. Well-developed negotiation, conflict resolution and influencing skills are required, with a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement and the development of productive working relationships.
* A commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and efficiency in engineering processes and technical solutions is expected. The role requires the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team, and to perform successfully in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, interfacing confidently with cross-functional internal teams and external stakeholders at all levels.
