Townsville Hospital and Health Service is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker – Generalist to join the Cultural Assessment & Liaison Team (CALT) within the Adult Program Area.
This is more than a health worker role. It is an opportunity to walk alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, families and communities during some of their most vulnerable moments, particularly when accessing acute mental health care.
You will help make sure our mob feel heard, respected, culturally safe and properly supported throughout their care journey.
This role is identified under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 as there is a genuine occupational requirement for the person in this role to be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
About the Role
As part of the Cultural Assessment & Liaison Team, you will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing Acute Care Services, including the Acute Care Team and Adult Acute Inpatient Mental Health Unit.
You will work closely with consumers, families, carers, clinicians and community organisations to provide cultural guidance, advocacy and connection.
Your work will help strengthen culturally safe mental health care and improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities across North Queensland.
What You'll Be Doing
* Provide culturally appropriate support, guidance and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, families and carers.
* Assist clinicians with culturally informed assessment, care planning and treatment planning.
* Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing acute mental health services.
* Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to strengthen culturally safe care.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations and service partners.
* Contribute to health promotion activities in mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, and substance use.
* Help bridge the gap between hospital services, families, community and culture.
* Support the health equity agenda by contributing to the elimination of racism and institutional barriers within health care.
Who This Role Is For
This opportunity would suit someone who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities, and who understands the importance of culture, kinship, connection and community in health and healing.
You may already have experience working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care, mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, community services, alcohol and other drugs, hospital liaison, family support, or community engagement.
Most importantly, you will bring cultural integrity, strong communication skills, compassion, and a commitment to making health services safer and more responsive for our mob.
Essential Requirements
* To be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, as this is an identified role under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.
* Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.
* A current Class C driver licence.
* The ability to work respectfully and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, communities and organisations.
* The ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* An understanding of, or ability to develop knowledge of, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, drug and alcohol, and cultural and historical issues.
* Willingness to meet Queensland Health vaccination and pre-employment requirements.
Salary and Benefits
* Base salary: $72,447 to $76,736 per annum
* Remuneration up to $87,553 + benefits
