Role Overview
At ALS, we encourage you to dream big. When you join us, you'll be part of a global team harnessing the power of scientific testing and data‐driven insights to build a healthier future.
At ALS Process Solutions (formerly Improve IO), we don't just tune PID loops – we build intelligent systems that transform plant performance. We're looking for an elite problem solver who enjoys diving deep into automation, data, and process optimisation. You'll be working across the full control stack, from field instrumentation and PLCs to SCADA, advanced process control (APC), and data historian/reporting systems. We design and develop our own software, which means there's always something new to learn and plenty of cross‐learning between team members. This role combines hands‐on programming with real‐world process control. You'll work with cutting‐edge plants, high‐performing engineers, and plenty of challenges.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop, commission, and optimise PLC, SCADA, and advanced process control (APC) systems.
* Diagnose and troubleshoot control system faults and performance issues.
* Write and maintain applications in Python, C/C++, Bash, SQL, and other scripting languages.
* Configure and commission historian, analytics, and reporting systems.
* Work with Linux‐based environments (Arch Linux experience highly regarded).
* Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation across projects.
* Maintain accurate technical documentation, drawings, and version control.
* Adhere to ALS procedures and safety standards at all times.
Essentials
* A degree in Engineering or Computer Science (Electrical, Mechatronics, or related).
* Solid experience designing, testing, and commissioning industrial control systems.
* Proficiency in PLC and SCADA/HMI programming (any major platform).
* Understanding of process control in mineral processing or mining.
* Strong analytical and problem‐solving mindset.
* Hands‐on familiarity with industrial networks and communications protocols.
* Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently on complex systems.
Highly Regarded Skills
* Experience with APC, data analytics, or optimisation systems.
* Experience with historians and data visualisation tools.
* Background in instrumentation selection and integration.
* PCB design or microcontroller experience (bonus points!).
The Work
The role involves a mix of Perth office‐based engineering and client site commissioning (8/6, 4/3, or 2/2 FIFO rosters). Expect hands‐on problem‐solving, data collection, analysis, and interpretation while collaborating with plant operators and engineers. Most travel is within Western Australia, with occasional interstate or overseas projects. Perth office hours are Monday to Friday, and typical site shifts are 12 hours when working away.
Eligibility
To be eligible to work at ALS you must be a Citizen or Permanent Resident of the country you are applying for, or either hold or be able to obtain a valid working visa.
Equal Opportunity Employer
Everyone Matters. ALS is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and is committed to fostering an inclusive work environment where the strengths and perspectives of each employee are both recognised and valued. ALS also welcomes applications from people with all levels of ability. Reasonable adjustments to support candidates throughout the recruitment process are available upon request.
