Part‐time, ongoing position (32 hours per week). Salary: $150,113 – $161,348 per annum (pro rata to be applied) plus Super.
About The Role
This position plays a key role in delivering municipal building surveying functions and supporting the Municipal Building Surveyor in meeting statutory obligations. You will oversee building approvals, enforcement activities and compliance processes, while providing leadership and guidance to a skilled technical team. The role involves working closely with internal teams, industry professionals and the community to ensure building works comply with relevant legislation, regulations and safety standards. You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and help shape effective service delivery across Building Services.
About You
You are a registered Building Surveyor (Unlimited) with strong experience in local government or a comparable regulatory environment. You bring a deep understanding of the Building Act, Regulations and relevant standards, along with the ability to interpret and apply these in complex situations. You have well‐developed leadership and interpersonal skills, enabling you to support and develop others while fostering collaboration and accountability. Your communication skills allow you to confidently engage with a wide range of stakeholders, and you approach your work with professionalism, sound judgement and a strong customer focus.
Key Responsibilities
You will undertake municipal building surveying functions including the assessment and approval of building permit applications, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and Council policies. The role involves managing and supporting both building approvals and enforcement activities, including inspections, issuing notices and orders, and responding to complaints or emergency situations. You will oversee the delivery of mandatory inspections, occupancy permits and certificates of final inspection, while also supporting programs such as combustible cladding audits and pool and spa safety compliance. Building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders is central to ensuring effective and timely outcomes. In addition, you will provide leadership and mentorship to a team of building surveyors, inspectors and technical staff, contributing to their development and performance. The role also involves driving continuous improvement, enhancing processes and systems, and ensuring high‐quality customer service in all aspects of service delivery.
Employment Requirements
* Current registration as a Building Practitioner by the Victorian Building and Plumbing Commission in the category of Building Surveyor (Unlimited)
* Tertiary qualification in Building Surveying together with significant practical experience in the industry and local government
* Extensive knowledge, understanding and the ability to interpret the Building Act 1993 and the Building Regulations 2018, particularly Class 2‐9 buildings and Class 1 buildings including siting provisions for single and small second dwellings
* Applicants must have the right to work in Australia.
* Preferred applicants will be required to undergo a National Police Record Check and hold a valid Working with Children Clearance.
