Position
The Position
The Board of Mental Health Australia governs the company to best meet its strategic directions. The Board maintains appropriate governance structures and accountability measures to ensure the company remains in a strong position into the future. As Mental Health Australia is a company limited by guarantee, the Board ensures relevant regulatory and statutory requirements are observed and adhered to in the company's operations.
To be effective, a Board needs the right group of people, with an appropriate mix of skills, knowledge, diversity and experience (e.g. qualifications, professional backgrounds, industry experience) that fits with Mental Health Australia's objectives and strategic goals. The role of the Board is to ensure Mental Health Australia best meets its strategic directions, legal and fiduciary obligations, and that the company remains in a strong position into the future.
A Mental Health Australia Board Director is required to attend approximately four to six Board meetings per year, and to participate in at least one Board committee.
Some interstate travel is anticipated; there are at least two face‐to‐face meetings per year with other meetings held online. In addition, it may be necessary to take part in ad hoc online meetings or participate in out‐of‐session Board decisions for membership approvals, management/financial reporting and as emerging issues arise.
The Board's aim is to have a diverse skillset across the Board. It considers required competencies regularly and support is available to build competency of individual Directors and the Board as a whole, through a formal Board induction program, ongoing support from the Company Secretary, and Board training and information sessions such as finance, risk, work health and safety, etc.
The number of Directors on the Board must not be less than five and no more than ten. The Board must consist of at least three and up to seven elected Directors and up to three Board‐Appointed Directors. Elected Directors are elected by the Mental Health Australia full members through the annual general meeting board nomination and voting process. Further information is available in the Director Eligibility & Board Composition Policy.
This volunteer position will be a Board‐Appointed Director and bring the board to full membership. Ideally, you will offer specific industry expertise in revenue diversification and/or financial and economic analysis of policy.
Organisation
The Organisation
For over 25 years, Mental Health Australia has advocated for mental health reform and continues to drive policy changes and proactively put mental health on the agenda.
MHA has over 150 members, including service providers, professional bodies, organisations representing people with mental ill‐health, family, carers and supporters, researchers, and state and territory mental health peak bodies.
As the national peak for mental health, MHA unites the mental health sector to present a cohesive voice to government and provide practical policy solutions to influence decision‐making, which in turn improves the mental health system and the mental health of people in Australia. We work to strengthen the impact and influence of the mental health sector and embed a human‐rights approach across the mental health system.
The views and expertise of people with lived and living experience of mental ill‐health, family, carers and supporters, along with our member organisations, underpin our work. We believe that by bringing together diverse perspectives across Mental Health Australia's members, the community and governments, we will create greater change and more innovative solutions than what any of us could do working alone.
