Company Description

Cultural Heritage Management Australia (CHMA) specializes in the assessment and management of Indigenous and historic cultural heritage across Australia. We have a highly qualified and supportive team working nationally from bases in Tasmania, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Queensland; CHMA has delivered more than 1,400 projects since 1993, including cultural heritage assessments for major infrastructure developments. The company undertakes projects of varying scale, from large multi-disciplinary field programs in remote areas to focused desktop studies, including work in National Parks and World Heritage Areas such as the Tasmanian Wilderness, Willandra Lakes Region, and K'gari (Fraser Island). CHMA works collaboratively with proponents, government agencies, community groups, and Indigenous stakeholders to develop practical and culturally appropriate management strategies. The organization is committed to best-practice Indigenous consultation, adherence to all relevant heritage legislation, and consistently high professional standards in project delivery and reporting.

This is a contract, casual or full time Field Archaeologist role supporting CHMA's cultural heritage projects across Australia. The Field Archaeologist will conduct archaeological fieldwork, including surveys in collaboration with Indigenous stakeholders and other specialists. Daily tasks include preparing for field deployments, collecting and documenting archaeological data, maintaining accurate field notes, and ensuring that work complies with relevant heritage legislation and project methodologies. The role also involves contributing to post-field analysis, assisting with report inputs, and communicating findings to project managers and other team members. The position requires flexibility to travel to project locations as needed and to coordinate effectively with a geographically dispersed team.

* Strong practical skills in Excavation and Field Work, including surveying, recording, and sampling in varied environments.
* Solid academic and applied background in Archaeology and Anthropology, with an understanding of Australian Indigenous and historic cultural heritage.
* Familiarity with heritage-related legislative and regulatory frameworks, and the environmental and heritage assessment processes.
* Relevant tertiary qualification in Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage Management, or a closely related discipline.
* Experience working respectfully with Indigenous communities and stakeholders, with a commitment to culturally appropriate consultation and engagement.
* Ability to work safely and effectively in remote field settings, including sound risk awareness and adherence to health and safety procedures.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills for contributing to technical reports and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
* Proficiency with basic field technologies (e.g., GPS, tablets, digital cameras) and standard office software for data entry and documentation.
