Waverley Council is seeking a proactive and experienced Media Advisor to drive our media presence and help shape the public image of one of Sydney's most vibrant and iconic local government areas.

About the Role

This role provides tactical media strategy, advice and support to the Mayor, Councillors and Council staff. It is responsible for enhancing public awareness and understanding of Council services, initiatives, projects and decisions.

What you'll do?

* Identify and leverage media opportunities, manage media enquiries, develop compelling content, and provide strategic communications advice to support Council objectives and reputation.
* Identify opportunities to promote Council initiatives, programs and community outcomes.
* Support crisis management communications to the community.
* Craft speeches, write copy and prepare high‐level briefing materials.
* Monitor media coverage and provide insights, analysis and recommendations.

What you'll bring?

To be successful in this role, you will have:

* Tertiary qualifications in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications or related fields and a minimum of three years' experience.
* Strong news sense with a proven ability to work with media outlets to handle inquiries, issue media responses and press releases.
* Experience in researching and drafting high quality speeches for a range of events and audiences.
* Demonstrated experience in implementing media strategies and in media‐related issues management.
* Excellent English skills and the ability to apply these skills to writing for varied audiences and purposes (e.g. editorials, publications, social media).
* Strong research and analytical skills complemented by creative thinking, assessing and dealing with issues using sound judgement and sensitivity.
* Developed networking and problem‐solving skills underpinned by an appreciation of political and consultative environments.
* Self‐managed and independent with a demonstrated ability to work to competing deadlines.
