Role
The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) plays a crucial role in fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment for our Indigenous students. As a liaison between the school and community, the AIEO works closely with teachers, students and families to develop culturally relevant educational programs that empower our Indigenous students to reach their full potential.
Responsibilities
* Build and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff and the wider community.
* Provide mentoring and pastoral care, particularly to students at risk.
* Work collaboratively with teaching staff to develop and deliver culturally relevant curriculum and learning activities.
* Conduct home visits to discuss academic progress and social development of students.
* Provide orientation and support for staff regarding Indigenous culture, history and protocols.
* Facilitate community input into school policies, programs and culture.
* Ensure a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Qualifications & Experience
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, languages, social and cultural protocols.
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of culturally responsive strategies that support the wellbeing, engagement and learning of Indigenous students.
* Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with Indigenous students, parents, teachers and community members.
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
* Strong organisational skills, capable of delivering culturally responsive education programs and evaluating outcomes.
* Previous experience working with Indigenous communities and/or in an Indigenous education role is desirable.
Eligibility
* Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or a visa holder with relevant work rights for the term of appointment.
* Hold a valid Working With Children Check before starting.
* Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and hold a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education's Screening Unit before starting.
