Role
The classroom teacher classification comprises two salary ranges – range 1 and range 2. The primary focus is on planning, preparation, and teaching of programs to achieve specific student outcomes. Teachers engage in critical reflection and inquiry to improve knowledge and skills.
As the teacher gains experience, contributions beyond the classroom increase. All teachers may be required to undertake additional duties appropriate to their salary range, qualifications, training, and experience.
Range 2 Expectations
Range 2 classroom teachers will be expected to:
* Have the content knowledge and pedagogical practice to meet the diverse needs of all students.
* Model exemplary classroom practice and mentor/coach other teachers to engage in critical reflection and support staff capacity.
* Provide expert advice about content, processes, and strategies shaping individual and school professional learning.
* Supervise and train one or more student teachers.
* Assist staff to use student data to inform teaching approaches that enable targets related to improving student learning outcomes to be achieved.
Range 1 Expectations
The primary focus of the range 1 classroom teacher is on developing skills and competencies to become an effective classroom practitioner. Teachers teach a range of students/classes and are accountable for effective delivery of their programs.
Range 1 teachers are supported by guidance, mentoring, and may supervise or train student teachers. They participate in policy development, project teams, and co‐curricular activities. They manage classroom, subject content, and teaching practice.
Responsibilities
* Direct teaching of groups and individual students.
* Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum programs.
* Undertake teaching related and organisational duties as determined by the principal.
* Participate in parent‐teacher meetings, staff meetings, camps, excursions.
* Undertake non‐teaching supervisory duties.
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach in the required curriculum area(s).
Selection Criteria
* SC1 – Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, literacy and numeracy, and experience responding to student learning needs.
* SC2 – Experience planning and implementing high‐impact teaching strategies, evaluating outcomes, and using data to inform practice.
* SC3 – Experience monitoring and assessing student learning, using data to inform practice, and providing feedback to students and parents.
* SC4 – Interpersonal and communication skills, establishing collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community.
* SC5 – Behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values, reflecting on practice, and engaging in professional learning.

Qualification Requirements
* Provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
* If completed an Australian postgraduate level initial teaching program on or after 1 January 2024, demonstrate completion of an accredited initial teacher education program approved by an Australian State or Territory Teacher Regulatory Authority.
* A person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program after 1 July 2016 must also demonstrate passing the LANTITE requirements if applicable.
