About the Hospital

The Royal Hobart Hospital is a tertiary hospital in southern Tasmania, serving a population of 300,000. Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania's largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

The RHH Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers services in the major Orthopaedic sub‐specialty areas (with the exception of spinal surgery) and there would be regular opportunities for exposure to those areas of interest to the successful candidate. Depending upon the qualifications and interest of the incumbent, there may also be the opportunity to be involved with other teaching and research activities.

The Orthopaedic Department is staffed by > 10 Orthopaedic Surgical Consultants, in a mix of Staff Specialist and Visiting Medical Practitioner roles.

Consultant staff areas of expertise which can accommodate Fellow exposure includes advanced upper limb surgery, lower limb arthroplasty including anterior approach hip arthroplasty, robotic assisted knee arthroplasty, ankle arthroplasty.

The Role

This role has been established to fulfil several targeted activities aimed to improve the delivery of timely surgical services to trauma patients and assist in the coordination and training of surgical Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Registrars. It is ideally suited to a surgeon who has recently been awarded Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery or will do so prior to the commencement of employment.

The Orthopaedic General and Trauma Surgery Fellow will be a member of Surgical Services, and the role will involve a mix of four key objectives:

* The undertaking of approved Orthopaedic surgical in‐patient and out‐patient services,
* Participation in Consultant after‐hours rosters,
* Provision of leadership and mentoring for junior staff including surgical RMOs and registrars,
* Assisting with quality improvement, audit and service improvement within Surgical Services.

Further details:

* The Fellow will have access to independent trauma operating sessions, with most sessions concurrent with an existing consultant operating session in an adjacent theatre,
* The Fellow will have outpatient clinic sessions, with a trauma review focus and with additional consultant support.

Salary and Allowances

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.

* Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 – $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

* Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full‐time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,389 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro rata per annum.
* Relocation support of up to $10,000 (flights, boat, removalist etc.) and up to 8 weeks accommodation or supported accommodation.
* On‐call allowance % of Base Salary.
* All other allowances as per current Award.
* And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on‐call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term full‐time day work (with on‐call), working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 27 July 2026 until 26 July 2027.

Essential Requirements

* Holds specialist registration
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.

Pre‐employment Checks

* Conviction checks in the following areas:
o Crimes of violence
o Sex related offences
o Serious drug offences
o Crimes involving dishonesty
* Identification check
* Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable Requirements

* Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery (or eligibility for Fellowship prior to the commencement of the role).
* Current Driver's Licence
