Position Summary
The Senior Estimator is responsible for preparing estimates and analyzing costs for various projects and providing technical and administrative support to project management teams. This role also contributes to the completion of estimates and proposals for projects while identifying risks, opportunities and maintaining strategies to win bids.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise the solicitation of trades and suppliers regarding bid invitations, pricing, addenda, and tender/bid closings.
* Supervise junior estimating staff that provides quantity take-offs for all important, designated areas of the estimate while ensuring the take-off is well notated for hand-over to the project team.
* Analyze plans, specifications, proposals, and other documentation in preparation of bid estimates for projects, perform or supervise the preparation of complete estimates on selected projects consisting of project site visit, quantity take-off, pricing, and presentation of estimate for management and client review.
* Actively build subcontractor/supplier database and relationships to ensure best pricing.
* Ensure the flow of preconstruction information internally and externally is maintained and documented.
* Maintain and communicate data on construction and material cost trends affecting preconstruction database.
* Perform turnkey estimating duties from time of project's introduction to company to beginning of construction, including: create/maintain organized estimate files, take responsibility for all preconstruction correspondence with all involved parties, list comprehensive estimate with detailed line items appropriate for the scope of work of each project, solicit accurate pricing from qualified subcontractors/vendors/suppliers, organize project site visits if necessary, define/confirm scope of work for each subcontractor/supplier and produce written scope sheet, provide scope of work clarification document, participate in meetings with project management team to prepare any successful estimates for construction.
* Apply knowledge and skills through the handling of complex problems and share expertise with the estimating team.
* Evaluate, present and support the presentation of estimate proposals.
* Prepare conceptual estimates by interpreting historical data.
* Maintain historical cost data.
* Oversee and manage selection and maintenance of subcontractors within a database.
* Provide guidance for non-estimating personnel on their estimating related requirements.
* Provide technical training to subordinates.
* Interface and communicate effectively with other estimating staff, all levels of management, clients and industry contacts.
* Contact and develop business relationships with subcontractors and suppliers for pricing within estimates.
* Explore future opportunities pursuant to the business plan, manage bids and lead the estimating team in all estimating opportunities.
* Prepare for and attend major trade pre-award meetings as required.
* May perform other related duties as assigned.
* Undertake risk assessment on price, supply, demand and length of project.
* Keep up to date with new construction materials, methodologies rules and regulations.
Education & Experience
* A minimum of 7–10 years of progressive construction estimating experience.
* Experience working on ICI projects, including hospitals preferred.
* Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Architectural Design, Engineering, Construction, or Quantity Surveying (preferred).
* Professional membership in CIQS (strongly preferred).
* Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office and related estimating software.
* Understanding of Revit models and ability to use model information for estimating.
Required Skills
* Strong knowledge of quantity surveying and estimating techniques as it relates to construction.
* Knowledge of construction costs and budgets, develops project schedule.
* Solid knowledge of trade scopes development.
* Ability to professionally operate in a fast-paced environment maintained by a company in a positive controlled growth mode.
* Must be able to meet deadlines and put in the time needed to get the job done.
* Effective professional oral and written communication skills.
* Must possess a strong work ethic and values that are above-reproach.
* Has developed technical knowledge of modern construction practices, techniques and equipment.

* Proven track record of work winning valued at $100M.
* Solid understanding of specifications, construction methods and procedures.
* Extensive knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take off procedures, Sub-trade procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures.
The expected salary range for this position is $130,000 to $145,000 CAD per year.
