About The Role
This role plays a vital part in ensuring public safety across Townsville by patrolling open spaces, parks, rivers, gardens, and streets to monitor compliance with local and state legislation. It provides support for the weekend Officer in the delivery of community safety, patrolling streets, pathways, parks, rivers, and other Council-managed open spaces to ensure the safety of the community accessing these locations. You will assist with animal management and take appropriate enforcement action where required, including parking and local law breaches.
The role is highly visible in public areas and helps deter misuse of Council spaces. Experience in animal handling, behaviour, and management is essential, as the position regularly responds to animal-related incidents. A proactive, community-focused approach and the ability to work independently are key to success in this position.
About You
Our ideal applicant is a confident communicator with strong listening, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills, capable of handling challenging situations with empathy and professionalism. Well-developed investigative abilities are essential, including the capacity to gather and present evidence to support enforcement and prosecution under local laws and environmental health legislation. The role involves responding to animal-related incidents, so demonstrated skills in animal handling, behaviour, and management are required. Advanced interpersonal skills are also critical, with the ability to engage the public in a calm, authoritative, and respectful manner—particularly during disputes or confrontational situations—while upholding community trust and safety.
