About Us

At Animal Welfare League of Queensland (AWLQ), our vision is for every companion animal to have a safe and caring environment where their needs are met. We are driven by a commitment to integrity, compassion, innovation, and optimism. As a leader in the animal welfare sector, we're dedicated to a brighter future for both animals and our community.

Animal Welfare League Queensland is one of Australia's most respected animal welfare organisations, caring for thousands of animals each year through rehoming, veterinary services, education and community outreach. Grants play a critical role in enabling innovation, improving animal outcomes, and extending our impact across Queensland. Good grants management at AWLQ is not just compliance or coordination — it is stewardship, leadership and impact.

Opportunity

We are seeking an Impact Grants Manager to establish, lead and grow AWLQ's dedicated grants function, turning previous ad‐hoc successes into a coordinated, strategic and high‐performing program. This role will ensure funding opportunities are aligned to organisational priorities, are well‐governed, and that they deliver meaningful outcomes for animals, supporters and the organisation. It is a rare opportunity to build something from the ground up: to design frameworks, embed processes, implement governance and shape the systems that will underpin AWLQ's grants programme for years to come.

Key Responsibilities
* Build and Lead AWLQ's Grants Program: Establish AWLQ's grants function, developing a clear, strategic and coordinated approach to grant funding across the organisation.
* Build and Lead AWLQ's Grants Program: Design and implement grants frameworks, policies, processes and tools to support consistent, compliant and scalable grant activity. Lead continuous improvement of grants practices to strengthen capability, efficiency and impact.
* Grants Strategy & Opportunity Development: Identify, assess and prioritise grant opportunities across philanthropic trusts and foundations, government and corporate funders. Work with internal stakeholders to translate organisational priorities and programmes into strong, funder‐ready proposals. Develop high‐quality grant applications that clearly articulate need, impact, outcomes and value.
* End‐to‐End Grants Management: Manage the full grants lifecycle from opportunity identification and submission through to contract management, acquittal and close‐out. Ensure compliance with funding agreements, reporting requirements and organisational governance standards. Maintain accurate grants tracking, documentation and records.
* Stakeholder Engagement & Relationships: Build strong, collaborative relationships with internal teams, including Fundraising & Philanthropy, Programs, Operations, Veterinary Services and Leadership. Act as the primary point of contact for grant funders, fostering trusted, professional and values‐aligned relationships. Support internal stakeholders to understand grants requirements, timelines and reporting expectations.
* Impact Measurement and Reporting: Track, measure and document outcomes and impact achieved through grant‐funded programmes. Prepare high‐quality reports and updates for funders, the CEO and the Board. Contribute to organisational impact storytelling by translating outcomes into clear and compelling narratives.
Essential Qualifications And Experience
* Demonstrated Not‐for‐Profit experience in grants management, philanthropy, fundraising, research administration or a related field.
* Proven ability to manage the full grants lifecycle, from opportunity identification and proposal development through to reporting and acquittal.
* Strong written communication skills, with experience preparing high‐quality funding submissions and reports.
* Experience developing or improving systems, processes or frameworks in a complex or growing organisation.
* Ability to work collaboratively with diverse internal stakeholders to develop funder‐ready proposals and deliver outcomes.
* Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines and competing demands.
Personal Attributes
* Highly organised, proactive and comfortable working independently in a greenfield environment.
* Strategic thinker who can balance big‐picture planning with hands‐on delivery.
* Strong judgement and attention to detail, particularly in high‐stakes or compliance‐focused work.
* Collaborative and relationship‐focused, with the ability to influence without authority.
* Values‐driven, ethical and aligned with AWLQ's mission and commitment to animal welfare.
